International Get-Together before the Winter Break ❄️🌍 Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming around 20 international students to our International Get-Together at the JKU Business School. Our newly appointed Associate Dean for Internationalization, Philumena Bauer, introduced herself and shared her vision for strengthening our global engagement. We were also delighted to have Dr. Lena Bergmair from the House of Research and Innovation, who presented the newly established unit and its mission. Colleagues from the International Welcome Center (Sonja Falkner-Matzinger and Sabine Wagner and the International Office (Christine Hinterleitner and @jelena djurdjevic) joined as well, offering support and insights into mobility opportunities and student services. With drinks, snacks, and lively conversations, students connected with each other and with JKU staff – creating a warm and engaging atmosphere. Ein spannender Austausch beim #Bilanzrechtssymposium 2025 an der Johannes Kepler Universität Linz liegt hinter uns. Gemeinsam mit Markus Isack habe ich einen Beitrag zum Thema „Digitalisierung und KI in der Wirtschaftsprüfung: Rahmenbedingungen und praxisnahe Einsatzszenarien“ präsentiert. Die Diskussionen – sowohl im Plenum als auch in der Mittagspause – haben eindrucksvoll gezeigt, wie groß das Interesse an einer fundierten und verantwortungsvollen Weiterentwicklung unseres Berufsbildes ist. KI wird die Wirtschaftsprüfung verändern – entscheidend ist, wie wir diesen Weg gestalten. In unserem Vortrag standen ua folgende Punkte im Fokus: 🔹 die technologische Entwicklung von KI-Modellen und ihre Relevanz für Prüfungsprozesse 🔹 aktuelle regulatorische Leitplanken und Entwicklungen (KSW, WPK, IAASB, EU AI Act) 🔹 unser Weg bei LeitnerLeitner Austria – von der Awareness zur Operation AI 🔹 konkrete Use Cases – Anhangs- & Lageberichtprüfung im geschützten Rahmen („lokale KI“) Die Takeaways für die Online- und Präsenzteilnehmer waren: 🔹 AI ersetzt nicht den Prüfer - sie erweitert ihn. 🔹 Technologie verändert den Prüfungsansatz und die Prüfungseffizienz und -effektivität. 🔹Regulatorische Rahmenbedingungen ziehen nach - aber die Praxis ist schneller. 🔹Die digitale Transformation ist kein IT-Projekt - sie ist ein Kulturwandel. 🔹AI Entwicklung ist schneller als bisherige technologische Entwicklungen und ist gekommen um zu bleiben. Ein herzliches Dankeschön an die JKU und hier insbesondere an Roman Rohatschek, Michael Tumpel und Marcel Steller für die Einladung und an alle Teilnehmer:innen für die vielen interessanten Gespräche. Ein besonderes Danke geht an Markus Isack für die ausgezeichnete Zusammenarbeit und den gemeinsamen fachlichen Austausch im Vorfeld und an Jaroslav Surman, Tina Weilguni und natürlich auch Thomas Kiesenhofer für die hervorragende Arbeit in unserer Operation AI bei LeitnerLeitner Austria und LeitnerLaw Rechtsanwälte für unsere > 1.000 Mitarbeiter:innen. Projekttreffen des internationalen FWF-Projekts in Krakau Vom 28. bis 29. November 2025 fand das zweite persönliche Projekttreffen des internationalen Forschungsprojekts „Family Firms’ Financial Decisions in Central-Eastern Europe” statt, das seit November 2024 von österreichischer Seite durch den Austrian Science Fund FWF gefördert wird. Das österreichische Projektteam – bestehend aus PI o.Univ.-Prof. Prof.h.c. Dr. Helmut Pernsteiner, Ass.-Prof. Dr. Thomas Brunner-Kirchmair, Dr. Anna Gappmaier und Julia Riepl, MSc – traf sich mit den polnischen Projektpartner*innen der Maria Curie-Skłodowska Universität in Lublin, Polen. Als Ort diente die Wirtschaftsuniversität Krakau in Polen. 🇵🇱 Im Mittelpunkt des Treffens stand die inhaltliche Zusammenarbeit. Die Teilnehmenden nutzten die Gelegenheit, den bisherigen Projektverlauf zu reflektieren und den Fortschritt der Datenerhebung zu besprechen. Schwerpunkt der Diskussion waren insbesondere die weitere Auswertung des gesammelten Datenmaterials, die Abstimmung zur Analyse der Eigentümerstruktur, die Planung zukünftiger Arbeitsschritte sowie Überlegungen zu Publikationsstrategien. Ein zentraler Bestandteil der Diskussion war zudem die Vereinheitlichung der länderspezifischen Daten, um deren Vergleichbarkeit für die anschließende Analyse zu gewährleisten. 📈 Ergänzend zur fachlichen Zusammenarbeit stand auch der informelle Austausch im Fokus. Neben dem Besuch des Weihnachtsmarktes stellte insbesondere die Führung durch das Königsschloss Wawel, den ehemaligen Wohn- und Regierungssitz der polnischen Könige, ein besonderes Highlight dar. Den Abschluss bildete ein gemeinsames Essen in einem traditionellen polnischen Restaurant, das sowohl dem persönlichen Austausch als auch der Vertiefung der Teamkooperation diente.  Sowohl der inhaltliche Fortschritt als auch der persönliche Austausch trugen zu einem erfolgreichen Projekttreffen bei und stärken die Basis für die weitere Zusammenarbeit.

Christoph Schuetz from the Institute of Business Informatics -- Data & Knowledge Engineering at Johannes Kepler University Linz recently presented research on the Target Time Management System (TTMS) to Prof. Eri Itoh's group at the Research Center on Advanced Science and Technology of the University of Tokyo and representatives from different companies, including Narita International Airport and Japan Airlines. The TTMS is an optimization platform for target times of arrival of flights, which was developed as part of the #HARMONIC project in a joint effort between Zurich Airport, Swiss International Air Lines, EUROCONTROL, skyguide, Frequentis, AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, and Johannes Kepler University Linz. The TTMS was recently tested in live trials at Zurich airport. The invited talk focused on the challenges of privacy-preserving optimization, which keeps the confidential preferences submitted by the airlines to the platform protected, and the consideration of equity, which requires that no airlines are consistently disadvantaged or advantaged in the long run.
