BAR Studio’s Design Director Vera Surmann shares her insights on what ensures aesthetically pleasing spaces also meet operational needs. “I studied architecture, engineering and interior design because, for me, when crafting spaces, all these elements must work together. For a great guest experience, all the design aspects - conscious or unconscious - will shape the guest journey. The balance between form and function has always interested me. From a project’s start, I always look at the planning, operational requirements and design at the same time, as they all influence each other. When developing designs, we will interrogate and integrate the technical aspects of the building as well as the individual design elements while ensuring functionality, constructability and the overall look and feel, which often results in new, innovative spaces.” Vera’s dual expertise in architecture and interior design informs her refined aesthetic and mastery of spatial planning; while her global career, spanning Europe, Asia and Australia, enhances her ability to deliver culturally informed, elegant designs. Get to know the people behind our projects, as they reflect on the ideas shaping hospitality design today. Stephanie Thursky, Design Director, combines talents in art and illustration to create one-of-a-kind artisanal designs. We asked Steph to share a personal perspective on how her fine arts background shaped her approach to hospitality design. “Fine art taught me the power of composition, colour, texture, light, and shade – principles I use every day at BAR Studio. Together with a sound concept, they transform spaces into layered, harmonious sensory experiences. The beauty of great design, like art, is its ability to evoke a unique response in every person who enters.” Stephanie has been shaping BAR Studio’s styling direction since 2009, crafting layered and balanced compositions. Inspired by her European heritage, she is drawn to creating custom fabrics, textiles, and artisanal finishes, while overseeing global hospitality projects, always ensuring refined, cohesive spaces. Her ability to integrate intricate details into broader concepts reflects BAR Studio’s signature design ethos.
