Riverlee is honoured to announce that our Seafarers precinct and 1 Hotel & Homes, Melbourne has been awarded the 2025 UDIA Victoria: 🏆 Project of the Year Award 🏆 Urban Renewal Award 🏆 High-rise Apartment Award These significant recognitions cap off a landmark year in which the Seafarers precinct reached completion and continued to realise its vision as a world-class riverfront destination. In the past year alone, the precinct has welcomed the opening of 1 Hotel Melbourne, which has already been met with remarkable acclaim after 5 months of opening: - receiving a Michelin Key for the hotel 🗝 - its Bamford Wellness Spa receiving the 2025 Award for Best New Spa in Asia Pacific 🌿 - and more recently, the recipient of 1 Hat for the hotel’s signature restaurant, From Here by Mike, from The Age Good Food Guide 👨🍳 The UDIA awards further celebrate the project’s ambition: the restoration of the heritage-listed Goods Shed No.5 and adaptive re-use pushed to new heights, the delivery of Melbourne’s first international hotel-branded residences, the establishment of Seafarers Rest Park and the creation of a precinct that reconnects Melbourne with its river in a respectful, meaningful and lasting way. WHERE CAN ICON TAKE YOU? Today’s Q&A is with Josephine Taylor – Icon Group HSE Manager. We spoke with Jo about our recent ‘Home Safe for the Holidays’ safety pause, a moment taken across all Icon projects last week to reset our focus on safety, and why she sees this initiative as particularly critical leading into the end-of-year rush. Q. Tell us a bit about your role at Icon. A.  lead Health, Safety and Environment across the Icon Group, partnering with project teams across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific to shape our safety strategy, strengthen planning, support wellbeing, and improve how we operate on site. At its core, my focus is on ensuring our systems support our people, enabling safer everyday decisions and helping our leaders create environments where teams can do their best work and go home safely every day. Q. Tell us about the ‘Home Safe for the Holidays’ - Project Safety Pause initiative you’ve developed since joining Icon. A. The Home Safe for the Holidays Safety Pause is a coordinated, group-wide stop-work moment designed to reset conditions ahead of the busy Christmas period. It gives our teams time to step back, review critical risks, tidy and reset sites, check planning, and reconnect with subcontractors. Supported by HammerTech inspections, leadership walks and open safety conversations, it’s a proactive circuit-breaker at a time when pressure, fatigue and competing priorities can cloud judgement.. Q. Why is this important? A. December is one of the construction industry’s most challenging months, with high pressure, fatigue and tight deadlines increasing the risk of shortcuts and incidents. The Safety Pause creates an intentional reset - bringing planning, risk management, housekeeping and wellbeing back into focus. At its heart, it’s about people. Everyone onsite has someone waiting for them at home for Christmas, and we want to do everything possible to protect that. Q. Do you think this should be an industry wide initiative? A. Absolutely, and many parts of the industry are already heading this way. Construction is a high-risk environment, and the pressures at the end of the year are universal. A coordinated, industry-wide pause would normalise the idea that safety resets are not a luxury, they’re a responsibility, they are an investment in how seriously we take our commitment to safety. If we can influence even one other business to adopt this approach, that’s a win for the entire industry. Q. What do you love about working at Icon? A. Icon has a genuinely people-first culture. We’re large enough to deliver big, complex projects, yet still small enough that good ideas don’t get lost, they turn into action. But most of all, I love the people. The level of connection and support I felt from my very first day was incredible. Our teams are hardworking, humble, funny, and genuinely committed to doing the right thing. It’s a privilege to support them. #icon #buildingwithpeople #creatingpossibilities #safetyfirst

WHERE CAN ICON TAKE YOU? Q & A with Jonathan Mallos, Project Manager at Icon. Q: How did the opportunity with Icon come about, and what made you want to join? A: I was drawn to Icon because the business has a clear vision to strengthen its work in the health sector (amongst others). That’s exactly where I’ve built most of my experience, and where I want to continue developing my career. Right now, Icon is tendering a number of government projects, which is the space I really enjoy. Working on complex public projects is something I know well and genuinely get a lot of satisfaction from.   Q: What do you think is the key to delivering successful health projects? A: You’re often working in live, fully operational facilities, and you have to understand that you’re just one part of a much bigger system. Success is about collaboration, not just with the client and consultants, but with end-users like nurses, clinicians and educators. They may not have construction knowledge, but they know exactly what they need to deliver patient care or learning outcomes. Giving people a voice, listening deeply, and tailoring the project to their needs instead of enforcing what we think is best is critical. As builders, we can’t live in our own bubble.   Q: What are you enjoying most about working at Icon? A: Icon is a really personable environment. You have access to everyone. People collaborate. Clients feel like genuine partners, not just contracts to deliver. There’s a family feel here, you’re not just a number and that culture matters as much as the projects we build.   Q: What’s been your favourite project in your career so far, and why? A: Delivering eight new operating theatres at Randwick for NSW Health Infrastructure. It was my first project as a Project Manager, a circa $25m project. Seeing the client so thrilled with the outcome was incredibly rewarding. It set the standard for the type of work I want to keep delivering.   Q: What would you say to someone considering a career in construction? A: I’ll be honest, I didn’t start with a burning passion for construction. It grew with every project I delivered. You go from a 2D drawing to a facility that changes people’s lives, and you get to walk the client through it at the end. Seeing their reaction, knowing it will serve a community for decades to come - that’s incredibly rewarding. If you want a career where your work has a visible, meaningful impact, construction gives you that every day. #Icon #CreatingPossibilities #ConstructionCareers #BuildingWithPeople #Health #BuildingWhatMattersMost

🏗️ Preserving history. Building the future. Icon is proud to mark the completion of Lorne Street Student Accommodation - a 758-bed development redefining sustainable student living in the heart of Auckland City. The 18-storey building combines modern design and construction innovation with the careful restoration of the 1929 Campbell House Art Deco façade, seamlessly blending heritage and high-rise. Officially blessed at a dawn ceremony led by Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Whai Rawa, the project honours the city’s past while creating a vibrant new home for the next generation of learners. Delivering on a Design and Construction contract for Cedar Pacific and UniLodge, the project features: ✅ Green Star 5 Star design ✅ Modular façade and prefabricated bathroom pods ✅ Tight urban logistics, just 400 mm from neighbouring properties ✅ Innovative façade sequencing to improve safety and efficiency These outcomes reflect the team’s exceptional planning, technical rigour and key partnerships with: Ashton Mitchell ltd, Inhabit, BGT Structures, Jensen Hughes Pacific, McConnell Property Limited and 22 Degrees - Building Services Engineering. 👏 Congratulations to our Icon NZ team and partners for bringing this landmark project to life - completed three weeks ahead of schedule and an inspired example of how we’re building what matters most with people, partners and purpose. #BuildingWhatMattersMost #IconNZ #StudentAccommodation #AucklandConstruction #Sustainability #HeritageRestoration #GreenStar #DesignAndBuild #Collaboration
