Each year around 3,300 Australian men die of prostate cancer making prostate cancer Australia's second cancer killer among men and this matches the impact of breast cancer on women.
Current therapies for prostate cancer include surgical removal of the prostate, chemotherapy, radiation and/or freezing the tumour however, there are often side-effects including incontinence and impotence (Wang Q, et al. Cancer Research, Dec 2011) Unfortunately success is dependant on a number of factors that include age, early diagnosis and type and progression of the cancer.
There is an adverse association between solar radiation (sunlight) and prostate cancer in Australia. That is, men who live in areas with low solar radiation have a significantly higher incidence of prostate cancer than those living at higher latitudes where solar radiation is also higher (Loke T. W, et al. BJUI 2011). Solar radiation is a catalyst for vitamin D conversion by humans and is therefore an important factor in determination of vitamin D status.
There is emerging evidence that changes in lifestyle, diet, the addition of dietary and herbal supplements and environmental factors may contribute to a reduction in the risk of developing prostate cancer and benign prostatic hypertrophy (enlarged prostate). In this issue these influences are discussed.

Is There A Vitamin D Deficiency Epidemic In Australia, And If So, Is This A Major Contributing Factor To Disease?
Journal of the Australia Traditional Medicine Society
Abstract
A review of published studies found that a significant number of Australians and New Zealanders have less than optimal serum vitamin D levels, with mild to moderate deficiency ranging from 33 to 84% depending on age, skin colour and/or those in residential care.
These studies have also reported a significant relationship between low vitamin D status and an increase in the prevalence of diseases including; diabetes, CVD, metabolic syndrome, osteoporosis, hypertension, certain…Abstract
A review of published studies found that a significant number of Australians and New Zealanders have less than optimal serum vitamin D levels, with mild to moderate deficiency ranging from 33 to 84% depending on age, skin colour and/or those in residential care.
These studies have also reported a significant relationship between low vitamin D status and an increase in the prevalence of diseases including; diabetes, CVD, metabolic syndrome, osteoporosis, hypertension, certain cancers, several autoimmune diseases the Flu and all cause mortality. The data also suggest that normalising blood 25(OH)VitD levels by supplementation with vitamin D3 may have a positive effect in disease prevention.
Methods The literature up to April 2010 was searched without language restriction using the following databases: PubMed, ISI Web of Science (Science Citation Index Expanded), EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library.

Nutritional and environmental influences on birth defects in Australia
Journal of the Australian Traditional Medicine Society

Genetics, environmental factors, lifestyle and nutrition can all contribute to an increased risk of birth abnormalities and illness during pregnancy.
Studies to date have found that insufficient dietary folic acid can increase the incidence of neural tube defects. Areas were herbicides and pesticides are used regularly have an increased incidence of birth defects. A lack of dietary zinc and vitamin E is also linked to low birth weight, as is maternal and paternal smoking. Low dietary vitamin C and paternal smoking can cause damage to sperm DNA, which may contribute to foetal abnormalities. Maternal drinking is associated with alcohol foetal syndrome. All of these causes of birth abnormalities can be addressed to some degree so physicians therefore need to examine the lifestyle and diet of prospective and expectant mothers more closely. Dietary supplements and lifestyle changes should be used more routinely in their endeavour to stem the increase of these abnormalities.
