E-bike and e-scooter injuries surge at Las Vegas hospital
LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Sunrise Hospital has treated patients in more than 150 e-bike and e-scooter accident victims since January, including two deaths, according to hospital officials who just released the data to FOX5.
The hospital says the two deaths were pediatric patients. The hospital started tracking e-bike and e-scooter accidents this year after seeing more and more patients.
“Since January 2025, we’ve seen over 150 of these incidents come to our hospital,” said John Pope, vice president of Trauma Services.
More than 100 victims sustained injuries severe enough to require hospitalization.
“You’ve got traumatic brain injuries, you have broken bones, you have internal injuries,” said Pope. “So, when we’re admitting that many patients, taking that many procedures with that many injuries, that’s concerning.”
Safety concerns during holiday season
Many of the patients were under 18 years old. Poppe expressed particular concern about safety during the upcoming holiday season, with Halloween trick-or-treating and Christmas gift-giving approaching.
“Here we are at the holidays. You’ve got trick-or-treating going on this weekend. The kids are going to be out on bikes, and it’s going to be dark,” Pope said. “And then you got, what’s everybody giving their kids for Christmas?”
Pope added, “There’s no actual real training or licensing. There’s no safety program out there yet for that.”
Hospital officials emphasized that children need to wear helmets when riding these devices. New ordinances in Clark County and Las Vegas require minors to wear helmets on e-bikes and e-scooters, with fines ranging up to $500 and $600 for repeat offenses.
Since Sunrise Hospital only began tracking these accidents this year, there is no comparison data from previous years. The hospital predicted the number of incidents could reach 200 by the end of 2025.
