Q: How did you get your start in healthcare administration?
My degree is in merchandising, but life took me in a different direction. After marrying my high school sweetheart, we moved to a small college town so he could attend school on the GI Bill. Jobs in my field were scarce, so I accepted a position in a pediatric office and fell in love with the field of medicine. From managing small practices early in my career to spending 25 years consulting for a professional liability insurance company, I've worked with a wide range of specialties. Ten years ago, I launched my own practice management consulting firm. After more than 40 years, I still love this work and strive to learn something new every day.
Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in medical practice management?
I've always had a natural curiosity and a desire to understand things deeply. Early in my career, I discovered that physicians enjoy teaching. One incredible pediatrician patiently answered my questions and encouraged my learning. That experience sparked my passion for understanding the inner workings of a medical practice.
Q: What accomplishment are you most proud of in your current role?
Starting my own consulting business was a leap of faith, and one I am proud to have taken. Ten years later, the opportunities have been constant and rewarding. Five years ago, I took on the role of independent practice management consultant for the National MGMA, which has been another highlight of my career.
Q: Can you share a pivotal moment or turning point in your career?
The decision to go out on my own as a consultant was a defining moment. After 25 years with the liability company, I felt immense gratitude for the experience and was fully prepared to take on this new challenge.
Q: What's one challenge you have faced in your career, and how did you overcome it?
Occasionally, I encounter a problem I'm not fully confident in solving. Fortunately, I've built a strong network of managers and peers over the years. I don't have to tackle challenges alone; I reach out to my community for insight and support.

Q: How has MGMA supported your professional growth (through resources, community or learning opportunities)?
MGMA's resources are invaluable. I frequently post questions in the member community and receive thoughtful feedback. The articles, webinars, podcasts and in-person events consistently provide practical information I can apply in my work.
Q: Which skills or perspectives have been most valuable in advancing your career?
Pursuing my ACMPE Certification and Fellowship was a game-changer. It validated my expertise and credibility as a consultant. Today, I give back by leading study groups to help other managers achieve their certification goals.
Q: What advice would you give to someone hoping to move from a frontline or administrative role into leadership?
Build a network of mentors and trusted advisors; Your personal board of directors. Commit to continuous learning and leadership development. MGMA offers an array of resources and connections to help you succeed.
Q: What motivates you most about working in healthcare today?
I thrive on learning and embrace the challenges of constant change. Every day is different. While core management principles remain steady, external factors such as regulations, payer rules, technology and patient needs keep me engaged and growing.
Q: How do you recharge or find balance outside of work?
Gardening is my happy place. We live on several acres in the country, and I love growing flowers and getting my hands dirty.
Q: Share a fun fact or something most people don't know about you!
I love antiques, and once learned how to cane chairs. After buying a vintage table and chairs without cane, I took a class and mastered the technique. Over the years, I've restored several pieces. Most people don't realize I enjoy hands-on projects and spending time outdoors.
