Are LDAR programs delivering the methane reductions we assume they are? A new peer-reviewed study from Shona Wilde and team at Carleton University's Energy & Emissions Research Lab (EERL) analyzed three years of LDAR data and independent aerial measurements in British Columbia. The study found: --> 3×/year OGI-based LDAR reduces detected emissions by ~50% at fully compliant sites --> Independent aerial surveys found 12× more methane emissions at the same sites, and 4x more after excluding combustion and intentional venting sources. Some takeaways: • LDAR surveys are a valuable complement to alternative technology, largely finding a different subset of sources that combine to capture the full distribution of emissions. • Screening surveys (AVO) were nearly ineffective and not a substitute for comprehensive surveys ➡️ This study underscores the importance of integrating complementary measurement approaches to capture the full distribution of emissions, leading to a more effective mitigation strategy.
