CRIME ALERT: Distraction Thefts Targeting Jewelry Since February 2025, police have have seen a concerning trend of "jewelry swap" distraction thefts across Durham Region. How the Thefts Occur: • Suspects usually work in pairs or trios, often using a vehicle with both a driver and passenger. • Victims are approached while walking, gardening, or sitting outside their homes—often while alone or with a child. • A suspect distracts the victim by pretending to be lost, distressed, or offering a “gift” of gold jewelry. • During the interaction, suspects make physical contact and discreetly replace the victim’s real jewelry (necklaces, rings, bangles, watches, chains) with fake items. What You Can Do: • Be cautious if approached by strangers offering unsolicited gifts or jewelry. • Keep valuables out of sight when in public. • Stay alert during unexpected or unusual interactions. • Report any suspicious activity immediately to police. These incidents are subtle, calculated, and often difficult to detect in the moment. Awareness and caution are the best defenses.

Celebrating Eight Weeks of Growth at YIP Graduation On August 22, 2025, the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) proudly celebrated the graduation of 100 youth from the Summer Youth in Policing (YIP) Initiative. Over eight weeks, participants took part in a transformative journey that supported their personal growth, professional development, and community engagement. Throughout the summer, Students gained confidence, strengthened leadership and communication skills, and built meaningful connections with mentors across DRPS and the wider community. They explored diverse career paths in policing, learned to navigate challenges, and developed a deeper understanding of themselves and others. At its heart, YIP fostered belonging and community spirit, inspiring youth to support one another and give back in positive, lasting ways. 🌟 This summer’s impact at a glance: • $12,000+ raised for Footprints 4 Autism and Hearth Place Cancer Support Centre. • 40+ newcomers welcomed at the annual Newcomer Soccer Tournament. • 400+ youth engaged at the Ripple Effect Forum alongside 13 Public Safety Partners. • 96 youth empowered through Jr. YIP Camp, building leadership at ages 10–13. • 50+ youth and 31 organizations connected at the CAN Conference for advocacy and networking. The 2025 YIP Graduation Ceremony was a true celebration of youth achievement and community. The event opened with the DRPS Pipes & Drums and Choir, followed by inspiring remarks from Chief Peter Moreira, Board Member Karen Fisher, MPP Lorne Coe, and a video message from Solicitor General Michael Kerzner. Two valedictorians shared heartfelt reflections, and awards were presented to recognize leadership, growth, and community contributions. This year’s success was made possible thanks to the support of more than 130 DRPS members—sworn officers, civilian staff, and volunteers—who guided and supported Students throughout the program. In addition, 25 community partners delivered engaging sessions, providing valuable insights and strengthening the impact of YIP. We are incredibly proud of our students, who leave the program as confident, compassionate leaders ready to make a positive difference in their communities and beyond. Their commitment, creativity, and growth over the summer have been truly inspiring. 👉 To learn more about YIP or get involved, visit www.drps.ca/yip.

DRPS Welcomes 25 New Recruits On Monday, August 18, the Durham Regional Police Service proudly welcomed 25 new recruits during a graduation ceremony in Ajax. The ceremony featured stirring performances by the DRPS Pipes and Drums and the DRPS Choir, as family and friends gathered to celebrate this milestone achievement. Chief Peter Moreira formally welcomed the graduating class and presented each officer with their badge. This class also made history as the first to receive the newly created DRPS Recruit Challenge Coin—engraved with the Oath of Office and presented to each recruit prior to the ceremony. “This coin is a symbol of your commitment, courage, and service to our community,” said Chief Moreira. “It is more than a keepsake—it is a reminder of the oath you have taken, the challenges you have overcome, and the trust placed in you by the people we serve.” The recruits went on to recite their Declaration of Membership, affirming their dedication to serve with integrity and respect. Constable Jacob Bruce, chosen as valedictorian, delivered heartfelt remarks on behalf of the class, thanking families for their unwavering support throughout the demanding training process. Chief Moreira also shared words of guidance for the new officers: “Today, you receive more than a badge—you receive the public’s trust. Guard that trust fiercely. Treat every person with dignity, fairness, and respect. These values, inscribed in your oath and on the back of your challenge coin, are not just words—they are commitments. Accepting this badge means accepting a higher standard. That standard is what sets this profession apart.” Constable Bruce was further recognized with the Allan D. Christiansen Memorial Award, an honour voted on by his peers. The award highlights leadership, positivity, commitment to fitness, and dedication to volunteerism—qualities that reflect Allan D. Christiansen’s lasting legacy. The newly sworn officers will now continue their journey with coach officers, gaining frontline experience across platoons throughout Durham Region. The ceremony also included a special moment for three Police Service Dogs—PSD Kobe, PSD Koa, and PSD Mack—who received their badges. We extend our congratulations and a warm welcome to the newest members of the DRPS family.

From August 5 to 7, the Durham Regional Police Service’s (DRPS) Youth in Policing (YIP) Initiative proudly hosted its 16th annual Junior YIP Leadership Camp — a free, three-day program for youth aged 10 to 13. This year, 100 campers joined our YIP Students for a mix of hands-on activities, leadership challenges, and unforgettable learning experiences. Each day brought something new: Day 1: Icebreakers, custom shirt decorating, interactive activity rotations, and a special visit from the DRPS Canine Unit. Day 2: A high-energy scavenger hunt, a mock crime scene investigation with the DRPS Forensics Unit, and more interactive rotations. Day 3: Presentations from the Earth Rangers, DRPS Tactical Support Unit, and the DRPS Internet Child Exploitation Unit, giving youth an inside look at how each team keeps our community safe. The day ended with a proud graduation ceremony where campers crossed the stage to receive their certificates. The camp’s success was fueled by the enthusiasm of our 11 participating DRPS Officers, who gave campers a chance to see policing beyond the uniform. Their presence helped build trust, inspire leadership, and strengthen community connections. This event wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of organizers, volunteers, DRPS members, supportive families, and—most importantly—the campers themselves. Together, we created a week filled with laughter, learning, and lasting memories. Thank you to everyone who made it happen! Applications for the 2025-26 Winter Initiative are now open and close August 25, 2025 at 4:00 p.m. Learn more at www.drps.ca/yipor email youthinpolicing@drps.ca.
