Congratulations to the new South Niagara Hospital (SNH) project team on achieving the Construction Documents milestone (the completion of comprehensive drawings and specifications that allow contractor/s to move forward with fabrication models and to start building/ordering systems equipment.) The hospital is set to open in 2028 and will be a state-of-the-art full acute-care facility offering 24/7 emergency, critical care, diagnostic, therapeutic, and surgical services. With 469 beds, 8 operating rooms, post-acute Complex Continuing Care, Inpatient services and specialized centres for stroke, geriatric wellness and aging, it will serve as a key healthcare hub for the Niagara region. SNH will be the first hospital in Canada to pursue WELL™ certification, focusing on the health and well-being of all building users. It is also targeting LEED Silver certification, ensuring that sustainability and energy efficiency are integral parts of its design. As a member of the design team under EllisDon Infrastructure Healthcare, HH Angus is providing consulting for the conveyance systems (automated guided vehicles, autonomous mobile robots, vertical transportation), and the mechanical engineering scopes of work. Of special note, we have designed the building’s HVAC systems to accommodate Indigenous ceremonies taking place not just in a few designated rooms, but throughout the patient care tower, so that patients do not have to be moved in order to take part in healing ceremonies. In what can only be described as a shocking letter, the Urban Development Institute said this week that development in Kelowna may come to a standstill as a result of insufficient electrical infrastructure. Preferred design and construction proponent announced for University Hospital of Northern British Columbia (UHNBC) Acute Care Tower Project Northern Health - BC is pleased to announce that the preferred proponent team for the design and construction of the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia (UHNBC) Acute Care Tower Project is: EllisDon Corporation – Construction --EllisDon is a Canadian, employee-owned construction and building services company headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario. DIALOG BC Architecture Engineering and Interior Design Planning Inc. – Design --DIALOG is a Canadian design firm specializing in architecture, engineering, and urban planning. This transformative $1.579 billion project will deliver a new acute care tower to enhance surgical, cardiac, and mental health and substance use services for residents across Northern B.C. Construction is expected to begin in fall 2026. The project is being delivered using an Alliance Contract, which brings together the owner, designers, and contractors into a single, collaborative team. This approach ensures all parties are aligned and committed to the project's success from the outset. "The Acute Care Tower at UHNBC will be more than just a new building — it will be a place where families throughout northern B.C. can access better care, closer to home, while supporting good local jobs and stronger communities,” said Bowinn Ma, Minister of Infrastructure. “Congratulations to our project partners - we’re proud to be working together to build a healthier future for people across the province."
