I recently had the privilege of attending the UNMATCHED Gender Equity Conference, convened by Tennis Canada, which brought together leaders from business, professional, and community sport. The experience was both inspiring and illuminating. My key takeaway: gender equity in sport requires deliberate action and investment, it does not happen organically. Despite progress, persistent gaps remain: • Women and girls are 23% less likely to participate in sport compared to men and boys. • 49% of girls drop out of sport during adolescence, six times the rate of boys. Factors include lack of role models, safety concerns, and negative body image. • Only 15% of sports coverage focuses on women’s sports, and fewer than 25% of leadership positions in major sports organizations are held by women. • The pay gap is extreme: last year, no women ranked among the world’s 50 highest-paid athletes. The good news is that intentional investments and policies are making a difference. Building a more equitable sports system demands sustained commitment from sport organizations, policy makers, community leaders, governments and business to create inclusive and safe environments. Events like UNMATCHED spark vital conversations and drive change. Kudos to Tennis Canada for leading this movement and advancing gender equity in sport. Tennis Canada Gavin Ziv

Swimming Canada High Performance Director and National Coach John Atkinson added that all swimmers start their own journey in club programs across the country. Athletes work with their coaches aiming to be on track with their performances and there are many great success stories. “The High Performance Centres based at UBC and also at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre offer a pathway in Canada. At the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris 21 of the 29 swimmers on the team (72 per cent) were currently training at or had trained at a Swimming Canada High Performance Centre for significant periods in their career when they were successful and or made significant improvement “This without doubt shows the value of the High Performance Centres for athletes as they develop or are already performing at the highest level of our sport such as world championships and Olympic Games,” Atkinson said. “As well as offering world-class coaching, the centres are the base, through the Canadian Sports Institute network, for many of our support staff for our program and teams. This is very valuable in supporting the world-class daily training environment for the athletes in the centres and on our teams.
