𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝗞𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿! At EPFL’s Technology Platform for Hydraulic Machines, our pressure sensors help make turbines more efficient and reliable — powering the next generation of sustainable energy.
The Technology Platform for Hydraulic Machines (PTMH) at École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, EPFL has chosen Kistler Group pressure sensors to improve testing and research on hydraulic turbines. The sensors are being used to measure pressure pulsations with high precision during model tests conducted under IEC 60193 standards. PTMH’s work focuses on testing scaled models of different turbine types, including Kaplan, Francis, propeller, bulb, and pump turbines. These tests measure parameters such as pressure pulsations, cavitation, efficiency, and power output to validate performance before large-scale installation. Located on the shores of Lake Geneva, PTMH operates three turbine test stands for hydraulic turbines, storage pumps, and pump-turbine testing. These model acceptance tests ensure turbines meet performance guarantees, a crucial step given their typical lifespan of more than 60 years. Pressure pulsations in turbines can reduce efficiency or cause structural damage. PTMH uses Integrated Electronics Piezo-Electric (IEPE) sensors from Kistler to measure these pulsations during research and development tests. The data helps engineers assess pulsation amplitude, frequency, and the effectiveness of mitigation measures such as air injection. As part of a control center upgrade, PTMH equipped its test stands with Kistler’s 601C IEPE pressure sensors. The sensors use piezoelectric technology to convert pressure changes into voltage signals and feature a compact design with high sensitivity and fast response times. The sensors also have an optimized membrane for dynamic pressure measurement and resistance to thermal shock. The setup includes Kistler’s 1983AD waterproof cables, which provide IP68 protection for underwater use, and the LabAmp 5165A laboratory charge amplifier, which supports data acquisition and integrates with PTMH’s LabVIEW-based analysis software. A PTMH representative highlighted the collaboration’s benefits: “We chose Kistler measurement technology because their IEPE pressure sensors measure pressure pulsations precisely – and what’s more, the DAQ devices can be used with LabVIEW without any problems. We also appreciate the fast recalibration service as well as the comprehensive advisory support and assistance Kistler has provided throughout this multi-year project phase.”
