Leadership, to me, is less about being right and more about staying open-minded. Early in my career, I thought admitting mistakes made a leader look weak. In truth, my reluctance came from pride, not conviction. Ego often drove me to defend my views despite contrary evidence. Experience taught me that real strength lies in humility: listening, owning errors, and adapting quickly. This openness builds trust; ego-driven decisions erode it. Admitting mistakes doesn’t undermine a leader; it strengthens credibility and sets an example for the team. Pride clouds judgment, but humility inspires progress and shared success.

“We are at our best when we mix technology with tradition” Tucker Brown has become an important advocate for agriculture and the beef industry in particular over the last several years, and he shared some important insights on a recent episode of the The Future of Beef podcast (link in the comments) around agriculture storytelling. He is creating content where authenticity is key but telling his ranching story in a way that draws in viewers from across the spectrum of understanding of how beef is produced. One of his goals is to counter the “de-humanization” of agriculture, which has led to an increasing, but ill-informed backlash against what is seen as “ Big Ag”. Tucker is doing this by trying understand what viewers want to see and not necessarily what the industry wants them to know; an important pivot to attempt to meet people where there are.   I’ve been thinking a lot about the intersection of culture and tradition with modern production agriculture. I tend to think about the culture and heritage of the beef industry, rural communities and production agriculture in general, which is a critical but often under-emphasized part of the story. It's an interesting dynamic that I'd like to explore more in a different post, but I would argue that without an identifying culture and traditions we would feed a lot less people. We don't see that in other products we consume, so what's the difference? But, it's not just the culture of producers, it's also the culture of consumers and their relationship with animal proteins, especially beef. We've seen historically high beef prices of late, but at the same time, we have increased demand. Beef plays a central role in the food culture of many consumers across all demographics. I see an opportunity for approaches that Tucker and others are using to bridge that divide and create a shared culture of production and consumption. Consumers don't want to be told what to think or, even worse, "educated", but seeing how people live, and work, and interact helps them to see that "Big Ag" is just people, like themselves. Even if consumers don't achieve a deep understanding of what it takes to produce food, this humanization provides an important shift in perception. So, there is a lot of discussion about how to share the production agriculture story, but are we overthinking it?? It's cool to be cowboy and producers have an excellent opportunity to show people what that means to them. Would love to hear your feedback - am I overthinking the value of culture?
