#CircularBuilding #Partizipation #Baukultur #WomenInArchitecture #BildungFürNachhaltigeEntwicklung #ArchitectureForFuture #EducationalGame #GameBasedLearning #Demokratiebildung #SDGs #urbanchange Christian Schlimok Kathrin Röschel

🌍 Learning with #Purpose in a Digital and Urban Age In today’s academic and increasingly technologised world—especially in urban environments—#primary #education must be #inquiry-based, #creative, and deeply connected to #real-life #contexts. When learning is grounded in meaningful, lived experiences, children develop not just knowledge, but confidence, agency, and curiosity. But how do we find those real-life examples and lines of inquiry that are - relevant to children, - align with the curriculum, and are - actually feasible in day-to-day teaching? Take swimming and water sports at #Müggelsee Berlin Cosmopolitan School as an example. It’s not just about movement or having fun outdoors. It’s about: - Exploring water safety, buoyancy, and the physics of movement (How the World Works 🧪) - Investigating local ecosystems, climate impact, or pollution (Sharing the Planet 🌿) - Building resilience and overcoming fears, especially for children who are hesitant around open water - Strengthening social skills through collaborative games and teamwork in nature If we design learning that’s not just about ticking boxes—but about #purpose—we support children in becoming reflective, empowered learners connected to their environment and each other. The question remains: how do we choose the right experiences that meet curriculum goals and #spark #authentic #student #interest? 💬 Let’s share #ideas. Upside Down Learning: What #Neurodivergent Minds Teach Us About #Multilingualism Working as a German-speaking teacher in an international, multilingual school setting at Berlin Cosmopolitan School has fundamentally reshaped how I understand #language #development—and more importantly, how I support it. Over the years, I have witnessed something both complex and beautiful: children whose brains are wired in a non-mainstream way, navigating two or more languages with a sensitivity that defies #linear #explanation. Neurodivergent children—whether #autistic, #dyslexic, dyspraxic, or simply wonderfully unique (like all humans)—do not learn languages the same way as #neurotypical learners. They often respond more to rhythm than repetition, to patterns more than grammar rules, and to movement more than static instruction. I have learned that: 🗣 Clear, rhythmic speech is more effective than fast, fluent talk. 🎶 Rhymes and songs become anchors for both comprehension and recall. 💡 Language rules come alive when paired with gross motor movement—walking out sentence structures, clapping syllables, or shaping letters in the air. 🌍 Consistency in language context (e.g., one person–one language or one situation–one language) supports mental clarity in multilingual children. 🔄 Translanguaging—mixing languages—is not a problem to fix, but a developmental phase to understand and gently guide. What strikes me most is how much potential there is when we stop expecting linear progress and start listening to how each child shows us their language world. Sometimes the path to #literacy is built with blocks, footsteps, colours, and rhyme. And that is not a deviation from the norm—it is the brilliance of diversity in action. Let us continue building learning environments where all languages—and all brains—are welcome. #multilingualism #neurodiversity #inclusiveeducation #earlychildhood #languagelearning #teacherlife #phonologicalawareness #educationforall #diversityandinclusion #learningdifferences Yvonne Wende Esther-Marie Merz

Celebrating the End of a War Berlin Cosmopolitan School – #Why #This #Generation #Needs #Hope The children in our schools today have been born into a #world #shaped #by #crisis: a #global #pandemic, #climate #emergency, #wars, and a #growing #mental #health #burden on young people. They #hear #more than previous generations ever did—through social media, newsfeeds, and adult conversations around them. And while #they #are #resilient, they are also deeply affected. That is why on 7th May 2025, we took a #conscious #step Berlin Cosmopolitan Natur e School gGmbH to celebrate not the beginning, but the #end #of #a #war. We marked 80 years since the end of World War II. With stories, songs, and ceremonies, we highlighted #peace, #healing, and #global #collaboration. Because for children to #believe #in #the #possibility #of #a #better #world, they must see that #crises #can #and #do #end. That #reconciliation #is #possible. That #societies #can #rebuild, #renew, and #rise #again. In our “Circle of Peace” ceremony, children created a stone as a symbol of hope and remembrance. They learned about #resilience—not just as #something #internal, but as #something #historical. They discovered that their ancestors once faced #unimaginable #hardship and still #created #peace. Children need this kind of #historical #optimism. It strengthens their identity, it supports their mental wellbeing, and it re-frames #adulthood #as a #place of #possibility—not only responsibility. And there’s more to celebrate: #nature #is #healing, too. Once thought to be extinct in the North Sea, grey seals have returned to German coasts. #These #are #signs #of #hope, of #balance #being #restored—not just by chance, but through #conscious #human #action. #Let’s #make #sure #our #children #hear #these #stories #too. 🌏 🌎 🌍 Because in times of crisis, celebration is an act of courage—and our children deserve nothing less. 🌻 🌱 🌻 Yvonne Wende Kathrin Röschel Esther-Marie Merz Heather Newkirk Daniel Vevers Carolina Mojto Rouven Ramon Steinfeld Fotos: Claudia Bernhard Mercy Abang, MBA Ulrike Karbjinski Rainer Spehl Julieta Aranda Jessica Barthel

A Partnership for Peace Berlin Cosmopolitan School– Why #Values-#Based #Education #Needs #Parents and #Schools #Working #Together 🌻 On 7th May 2025, something truly remarkable happened at our Berlin Cosmopolitan Natur e School gGmbH. To mark the 80th anniversary of the #end #of #World #War #II, our school community—parents, pupils, and staff—came together in a shared commitment to #peace #education. The entire day was designed, led, and facilitated by parents. It was a powerful reminder that #values-#based #learning thrives best when it is #co-#created by #school and #home. In today’s world 🌍 🌎 🌏 , our schools must do more than teach facts—they must foster #global #citizenship, #emotional #intelligence, and #critical #thinking. These are not soft skills; they are survival skills for a #peaceful #future. Children learn these most effectively when the values they encounter at school are reflected and reinforced at home. That’s why collaboration with parents is not a luxury—it’s a #necessity. This event, “Time Detectives – Mission for Peace”, was a living example of co-education in action. Parents presented deeply personal, global perspectives on war and peace—from Germany to Korea, from China to Mexico—using stories, artefacts, role plays and reflection stations. These narratives gave context to the abstract concept of war and enabled young learners to #connect #emotionally with #history. 🌱 But what made the day so special was not just the content. It was the #shared #ownership. Children saw their #parents #and #teachers #side #by #side, united in purpose. They experienced that education is not something done to them, but with them—and that knowledge rooted in #empathy #can #change #the #world. In a time where polarisation is rising and empathy is under threat, this kind of school-parent partnership is not just desirable. It is essential. Together, we are building schools that are not just sites of learning, but #communities #of #peace. Thank you to all children and adults involved for all their commitment for this united mission. #Balancing #Screen #Time with #Green T#ime – Tools for a #Neuro-#Inclusive #Future Neurodivergent learners, including children with ADHD, autism, sensory processing differences or PDA, are particularly vulnerable to #overstimulation from excessive screen use. Digital tools may serve a purpose, but #they #cannot #replace #sensory-#rich, #embodied #experiences that #build #focus, #confidence, and #emotional #regulation. Forest environments offer a powerful counterbalance. A walk through the trees, climbing a fallen trunk, or breathing under the canopy—these are not small things. They are #acts #of #co-#regulation. They stimulate the cerebellum, support attention, and offer what structured classrooms often struggle to provide: rhythm and rest. Practical tools are essential. In our nature-based settings, we use: #Pomodoro #adapted #for #outdoors: short work phases, followed by movement breaks. #Sensory #rituals: tree breathing, grounding objects, and visual mantras. #Focus #tools: writing and reading in natural environments, without judgment or pressure. This is not an escape from structure—it is strategy in action. #Structure #follows #strategy, and the strategy is clear: #support #the #body #to #calm #the #mind. Let us give children not just permission to move, but environments where that movement leads to growth. #GreenTime #OutdoorLearning #ADHD #PDA #Autism #SensoryIntegration #NeurodivergentSupport #ForestSchool #EducationInnovation #NatureHeals #HolisticDevelopment #ECIS2025 #ISD2025 Berlin Cosmopolitan School Berlin Cosmopolitan Natur e School gGmbH Yvonne Wende Kathrin Röschel Esther-Marie Merz

Nature is Not a Luxury – It is a Necessity for Neurodivergent Learners From 9–10 May 2025, the #ECIS & #ISD #Outdoor #Learning #Conference in Düsseldorf will bring together educators passionate about #rethinking #education through the lens of nature. I will be contributing with the session: “The Neurodivergent Child in Nature’s Classroom: #Therapy or #Natural #Habitat? Balancing Screen Time with Green Time.” Here is the heart of the message: nature is not just #restorative, it is #essential—especially for neurodivergent children. #Forest #therapy #research in Japan (Shinrin-yoku) shows that natural environments reduce cortisol levels, lower blood pressure, and promote emotional balance. The smell of trees, the feel of bark, and the calming sounds of rustling leaves activate the parasympathetic nervous system. For neurodivergent learners, who are often overwhelmed by artificial stimuli, this creates the conditions for genuine regulation and learning. Many of these children retain primitive reflexes like the Moro reflex, leading to #hypersensitivity and #poor #coordination. Nature—through climbing, balancing, and walking on uneven ground—supports the integration of these reflexes. It provides movement, challenge, and calm, without clinical intervention. In many ways, the forest is both the therapist and the classroom. Let us move beyond fitting children into boxes they were never meant to sit in. Let us ask: Do we want to include neurodivergent learners in our current systems, or are we willing to #redesign #those #systems with their needs in mind? #OutdoorLearning #Neurodiversity #InclusiveEducation #ForestSchool #ADHD #Autism #PrimitiveReflexes #NatureForAll #HolisticEducation #ECIS2025 #ISD2025 #Düsseldorf Berlin Cosmopolitan School Berlin Cosmopolitan Natur e School gGmbH Yvonne Wende Kathrin Röschel Esther-Marie Merz

Should Children Have the Right to Vote? Reflections from the ACE Summit in Paris  Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending the #ACESummit hosted by Center for Curriculum Redesign and BE Beyond Education in Paris by, where leaders from diverse fields of #education and #AI gathered to discuss the pressing challenges of our time. In one of the most thought-provoking panels François Taddei posed a bold and transformative question:  ➡️ What if we gave children the right to vote?  This idea might seem radical, but consider the historical arguments against women’s suffrage. For centuries, society believed that women lacked the capacity or knowledge to engage in politics—a notion we now reject as absurd. Today, children face similar misconceptions. But if children could vote, how would our democracy evolve?  ➡️  The Case for Youth Voting   - Changing Education and Curricula: If children had the right to vote, our education systems would need to adapt. Curricula and teacher training would shift to prioritise civic education, ensuring young people are informed and prepared to participate in democracy.   - Elevating Youth Voices: Young people are already advocating for causes like climate justice, social equality, and technological innovation. Their voices deserve representation in the systems that shape their futures.   - Intergenerational Power Sharing: Democracy thrives on diverse perspectives. Incorporating the worldview of younger generations through power-sharing enriches decision-making and builds a more inclusive society.  ➡️  A Call to Action for Education   To prepare children to be active participants in democracy, we need robust, science-backed education systems. Education should empower students to not only understand the complexities of the world but also to be the change they wish to see. 🌍 EDUCATE US SO WE GET A BETTER UNDERSTANDING, HOW TO BE THE CHANGE WE WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD. 🌎 Schools must evolve into spaces where students learn how to tackle global challenges and advocate for the futures they want. This aligns with the ethos of “Nothing for us without us”—ensuring that youth have a seat at the table.  Let’s rethink the structure of our democracy. By granting children the right to vote and integrating them into decision-making processes, we not only elevate their voices but also inspire intergenerational collaboration for a stronger, fairer world.  ARE WE READY FOR THIS BOLD STEP FORWARD?  #YouthEmpowerment #EducationForDemocracy #IntergenerationalLeadership #CivicEducation #FutureOfDemocracy #YouthVoice #InnovationInEducation Kathrin Röschel Charles Fadel Berlin Cosmopolitan School Berlin Cosmopolitan Natur e School gGmbH
