🔍 Google’s grip on shopping search? About to be tested. 🛒 “I’m looking for a new espresso machine.” (Disclaimer to Dorothea: it’s just an example - no new espresso machine needed right now 😎) Well, coming back to the topic: Imagine typing that into ChatGPT – and getting tailored product suggestions right there in the chat. No browser. No ads. No endless tabs. That moment just became reality. Since Monday, OpenAI has been rolling out a new shopping feature inside ChatGPT. It might look small – but it could fundamentally change how we search and shop online. As someone with a passion for search marketing – that’s how I started my career – this feels like a true inflection point. ⚠️ What now matters more than ever: ✅ Structured, high-quality product data → Messy feeds? Outdated info? You won’t get surfaced. Period. Great if you’ve already got Pimcore or another modern PIM solution in place! ✅ Strong SEO and accessibility foundations → If your content isn’t machine-readable and optimized, AI will ignore it - no matter how great your product is. Plus: Focus on SEO on product detail pages will become more and more important. SEO for product categories will become less relevant and it is already happening: Think of Google Shopping/Pmax or Amazon Optimization. Therefore, choose your tech stack wisely - Shopware, for example, is one of the fastest ecommerce systems with strong SEO capabilities out of the box. ✅ Reputation and/or niche authority → In an AI-first world, trust & relevance drive visibility. Known brands win. As someone who spent years focusing on marketing communications, brand, and time in creative agencies – it’s another confirmation to see that investments in brand are becoming the true long-term success factor. 💡 Two powerful tips to be part of this new shopping experience soon: 1️⃣ Check your robots.txt → Don’t block 0AI-SearchBot. OpenAI’s crawler needs access to your content. 2️⃣ Submit your site proactively → Want your products included? Register via OpenAI’s product discovery form. 🧠 But here’s the big picture: OpenAI is entering commerce. The real question is: How will they scale distribution and reach shoppers? 🧭 A browser of their own? Buying Chrome? Direct access to intent – bypassing Google? What’s your take?
