We often talk about AI as something democratizing – no-code, low-code, tech for everyone. But in reality, I’m starting to see signs of the opposite. At AI hackathons and “AI builder meetups,” the same stereotypical group of entrepreneurs still dominates. Why is that? I wish I had a clear answer. But maybe that’s part of the problem — we don’t stop to question it. We don’t hold up the mirror? Because if we keep praising AI as inclusive, while ignoring who actually gets to build it, then it’s no longer a blind spot. It’s self-deception. Venture capital is flowing. The AI momentum is real. And in the middle of the hype, an uncomfortable truth is taking shape: we’re building a new AI world on top of old structures — perhaps even a more unequal tech sector than before. The AI tsunami is rolling in – and equality, equity, and inclusion risk being swept away? What happens if we strip away the hype and look at AI for what it really is? Is Climate Tech Dead? That was the bold opening question from Karl Liapunov during his keynote at SlushD Mandal. No one knows the Norwegian climate tech startup ecosystem better than Karl, an American who has personally analyzed 250 startups in the field. For those expecting a feel-good story, the reality was sobering—investments in climate tech have dropped by 50% since the peak years of 2020-2021. But there is a silver lining: an increasing number of international investors are turning their attention to Norway. Much of this momentum can be credited to Karl, who, together with Åshild Aarø and Harrshinny Vallipuram organized the Climate Tech Summit—bringing 150 international investors to Startuplab Karl is deeply passionate about connecting international investors with Norwegian startups. If Norway is to establish itself as a global hub for clean tech startups, we need more people like Karl.

Most pre-seed rounds in the Nordics follow a familiar pattern: About $1.5M, usually led by a dedicated local pre-seed fund. These rounds are important for the ecosystem. They provide founders legitimacy, support, and a starting point. But pre-seed investing isn’t only about solid foundations. It’s also about extremes. The best founders often don’t fit neatly into the middle of the curve. Some raise <$1M syndicates: fast, scrappy, "headless" (h/t Sarah Drinkwater) rounds that bring multiple great people (angels, micro funds, Solo GPs etc) around the table, providing early validation before a breakout seed. Others raise $3M+ internationally led rounds, skipping the incremental step and going global from day zero. In 2024, I thought I wanted to build a pre-seed fund. But then I realised most pre-seed funds live in this middle while the best companies were being built at the edges. That’s where I now focus: either bringing a syndicate around a diamond in the rough, or earning my place as the rough in the diamond! If you draw out the typical size of pre-seed rounds, it looks like a bell curve. Pre-seed, as it’s usually practiced, is about the middle. I invest in the tails. That’s why I no longer think of my fund as a “pre-seed fund” but rather a "first-cheque fund" operating at the edges of the earliest days.
