    ✨ Squeezed between the canal and the railway, HDD works in Sète are now complete. Alongside SUBTERRA SAS recently for the completion of a second HDD crossing that will enable the municipality of Sète (Sète Agglopôle Méditerranée) to reinforce the town’s wastewater network. ✅ HDD # 1 : DN 630, 460 m – completed in late 2024, beneath a road and the Sète train station car park. ✅ HDD # 2 : DN 630, 700 m – fully curved, now completed, running under the same car park and the canal, to connect to the pumping station. A complex environment — limited working space, dense urban surroundings, and heavy traffic — added significant challenges to the project. In addition, the uncertain elevation of the marl-limestone substratum and the instability of surface shell sands called for careful monitoring. OPTIMUM provided daily support throughout the project, offering real-time technical recommendations and proposing operational adjustments, thanks to advanced modelling and the specialised knowledge of its engineers.     Great to have worked on another interesting project with SADE. 👍 Interesting fact here was using an existing shaft to launch the AVN 1200 microtunnel. OPTIMUM’s G3 mission provided geotechnical analysis as well as monitoring throughout the tunnelling works. Well done to all involved 👏

    🚧🚧 🚧  Fewer cars on the road during the summer months - but the work doesn’t stop ! OPTIMUM engineers were alongside SADE on the main road between Lille and Tourcoing for the completion last week of an auger boring crossing beneath the tramway lines. This DN 1000 crossing will enable Lille metropolitan authority (Métropole Européenne de Lille (MEL) to reinforce the region’s drinking water network – essential infrastructure for long-term sustainability. The works were carried out on behalf of the Métropole Européenne de Lille (MEL) with project management by Sourcéo, la production d'eau de la MEL Prior to drilling, OPTIMUM’s calculation and modelling experts determined push forces, load resistance, as well as the appropriate entry / exit pit dimensions for the project. This was able to be done swiftly, thanks to in depth geotechnical knowledge of the region. OPTIMUM’s trenchless engineers were then onsite during the construction of the 47-metre-long crossing. Working within the confines of the urban area, SADE built the retaining structures - steel sheet piling on entry, slide rails at the exit - and FORAGES DU NORD OUEST the crossing itself.     😮 Drilling through the walls of a microtunnel ? Really ? In streets south of Paris, a seemingly ordinary underground construction site ... and yet, every day, engineers stopped by to see quite a unique drilling operation 🤔 ❓When renovating the wastewater network in L'Haÿ-les-Roses, one question had project managers scratching their heads: how to connect the existing surface-level wastewater pipes to newly constructed gravity-flow microtunnels 15 meters below ground? After dismissing several potential possibilities, an innovative solution was found: 9 short diagonal boreholes, drilled almost vertically, through the wall of the new microtunnel itself – a first in France !! OPTIMUM’s trenchless engineers were then commissioned to monitor the drilling operations. Particular attention was paid to water management, since all the works were being carried out below the water table. 💪 Thanks to great teamwork and efficiency, the whole project was completed in just 5 weeks. The houses can now be connected up to the new, improved network.     🚧Ever see a site that just seems too busy for a crossing (or two) ? Two parallel trenchless crossings, passing under the T7 tramway, were completed last week just north of Paris’ Orly airport. Though they weren’t the longest, they weren’t the simplest either ! With a busy dual carriageway, one of France’s biggest shopping centres and a multitude of underground networks nearby, finding a drill path for not one, but two, crossings meant going under the water table. From engineering to execution, project teams faced significant challenges: 🔸Avoiding the mass of existing underground networks 🔸Constructing parallel drill paths with limited surrounding space at the exit 🔸Managing the water flow and welding under the water table 🔸The high volume of road traffic and pedestrians OPTIMUM engineers designed all the retaining structures and crossings for project owner Réseau de Transport d'Électricité, minimising the risk of ground settlements and vibrations under the tracks above. They then supervised all the construction works onsite: two parallel 45-metre-long, DN 600, down-the-hole (DTH) hammer drills, a slide-rail entry shaft and a timber exit shaft. Two stepped wooden pits were also designed to facilitate insertion of the ducts / cables, given the congested urban environ.     🌍 Short crossing, big impact !! Auger boring under railway tracks in Normandy Although this auger boring crossing is relatively short, its impact is far-reaching. The 30-metre-long structure will allow GRDF to expand its biomethane initiatives — turning organic waste into biofuel — and marks another important step in energy transition. 🛤️ When the window to bore under a railway line is tight, having a specialised trenchless engineer onsite who TRULY understands the project is crucial. Geotechnical decisions can be made in real-time to minimise downtime, while ensuring compliance with SNCF requirements. GRDF, therefore, commissioned an OPTIMUM engineer to be present onsite day and night. 👷 OPTIMUM has supported project owner GRDF at every step of this trenchless crossing beneath the Paris–Cherbourg railway line: not only feasibility studies and design engineering, but also supervising ground investigations, constitution and validation of the SNCF dossier, overseeing monitoring of the railway platform, and finally, supervising construction.     🎉 Celtic Interconnector: All trenchless works finished !! The last trenchless structure for the Celtic Interconnector project has just been completed: a 126-meter-long HDD river crossing that marks the end of 15 months of intense trenchless work in Brittany. This last crossing, drilled by Groupe Gendry and monitored by OPTIMUM, passed 10 meters under a coastal river through sands and granite rock. Despite being in a wetland area with limited access, no breakouts occurred, thanks notably to careful monitoring of the drilling and mud parameters. This was particularly important given the protected woodland areas and houses nearby. Inspections have now confirmed the HDD’s structural integrity, ready for installation of the high-voltage cables: 2 HDPE ducts of DN 225 and 5 HDPE ducts of DN 63. 🌍Another step in Europe’s energy transition ! The Celtic Interconnector project will be the very first HVDC interconnection between Ireland and mainland Europe, increasing the safety, stability and quality of the electricity supply between the two countries.     📣 Tarn-et-Garonne : Mission complete !!! Proud to announce the successful completion of the final 3 HDD crossings for Teréga’s 23km network extension in the Tarn-et-Garonne region of southwestern France. From feasibility studies to construction, OPTIMUM engineers have accompanied project owner Teréga at every step of the way since 2019. These last 3 horizontal directional drills again passed under key infrastructure, the deep surface alluvium requiring entry casings for each : 🔸Under the river Tarn : a 420-metre-long HDD, housing a DN 80 steel pipe, drilling 18m under the riverbed. 🔸Under rail and canal: a 425-metre-long HDD, housing a DN 200 steel pipe, passing 23m below the Bordeaux – Toulouse – Sète railway line as well as the Canal de la Garonne. 🔸Under rail : a 190-metre-long HDD intersect further down the line, to house a DN 250 HDPE pipe, 16m under the tracks. A dedicated team of OPTIMUM engineers followed these critical sections, where continuous monitoring of the railway platform, as well as weekly piezometrical surveys were conducted to ensure the integrity of the drilling works.     📣 CanaMarne : All AVN 1800 microtunnels are complete The CanaMarne project is entering its final phase, the last of the AVN 1800 tunnels having been completed this week. This latest gravity flow tunnel runs 500 metres underneath agricultural land and a major canal to the east of Paris. Works spanned 5 weeks, with teams negotiating the complexities linked to an entry shaft 24 metres deep. Tunnelling through marl and gravel, as well as slope colluvium towards the exit, the main challenge was inevitably the changing geology and the resulting shifts in the mechanical properties of the soil. Just two smaller AVN 1000 microtunnels now remain on this ambitious project: improving drainage around Paris Charles de Gaulle airport by redirecting rainwater to a treatment plant and then out to the River Marne. OPTIMUM has been proud to support SADE’s CanaMarne team throughout the project, from works preparation to completion. The trenchless specialists ensured that comprehensive modelling and design engineering facilitated all the microtunnelling operations, then monitored the construction works, providing availability and expertise at every step.
