Major economic disruptions, rapid digitalisation and shifts in geopolitical dynamics have shaped competition enforcement over the past decade. Today we launched the new report, A decade of OECD Competition Trends, Data and Insights, which shows that: ➡️ Competition cases have become more complex which explain an overall enforcement decline. ➡️ Merger control activity has increased: in 2024, competition authorities from 20 jurisdictions around the world prohibited or challenged at least one transaction. ➡️ Market studies by competition authorities continued being used as a key instrument to diagnose competition issues. As global research becomes more interconnected and more strategically important, research security is rising rapidly on policy agendas. In 2025, OECD countries reported 250+ initiatives, up from just a few dozen in 2018. Research security is about identifying and managing risks such as foreign interference, misuse of sensitive research and threats to academic freedom, while keeping science open, collaborative and globally connected. Science and technology now sit at the core of national and economic security, and countries are moving from awareness-building to concrete governance, regulation and due diligence. The challenge is ensuring protection without slowing innovation or international cooperation. Proportionate, risk-based policies, clear guidance and tools for researchers and institutions, and continued monitoring, transparency and international dialogue are all key to safeguarding science.
