Birma Devi's journey from subsistence to self-reliance is helping redefine what is possible for women farmers in the region. Through Vindeshwar Mahila Utpadak Samuh, supported by the Himmotthan Society under the Tata Trusts’ Climate Smart Agriculture and Allied Livelihoods Initiative, women farmers like Birma Devi are learning climate-resilient practices like line-to-line sowing, organic nutrient use, timely pest management, and access to machinery that improves productivity with minimal effort. Her journey is a testament to how empowering women with the right resources can lead to the entire community’s growth, and the Tata Trusts extend their support through initiatives that enable communities to grow with dignity and resilience. About us
A century-old vision that’s transforming lives... Tata Trusts is amongst India's oldest, non-sectarian philanthropic organisations. The Trusts own two-third of the stock-holding of Tata Sons Limited, the apex company of the Tata group of companies. The wealth that accrues from this asset supports an assortment of causes, institutions and individuals in a wide variety of areas. This way, the profits that Tata companies earn, go back many times over to the communities they operate in. The funds have been deployed towards community development programmes across the country, for over 100 years now. The Tata Trusts continue to be guided by the principles of its founder, Jamsetji Tata. With his vision of proactive philanthropy and approach to ‘giving’, the Trusts catalyse societal development while ensuring that initiatives and interventions have a contemporary relevance to the nation. Philanthropy that's making a real difference... Since its inception, the Tata Trusts have played a pioneering role in transforming traditional ideas of charity and introducing the concept of philanthropy to make a real difference to communities. Through grant-making, direct implementation and co-partnership strategies, the Trusts support and drive innovation in the areas of: • Natural resource management • Education • Health • Livelihoods • Civil society strengthening • Media, arts, crafts and culture • Relief and rehabilitation • Innovation • Institutions The Trusts engage with competent individuals and government bodies, international agencies and like-minded private sector organisations to nurture a self-sustaining ecosystem that collectively works across all these areas. Alongside this, girls’ enrolment in schools moved upwards reaching 48.3% indicating a slow yet promising growth. This week’s Sunday Reads delves into the shifts in the education system, exploring how infrastructure, supportive policies, community initiatives, are contributing to increasing girls' enrolment and retention in schools as well as “feminisation” of the teaching profession. Amrita Patwardhan, Head, Education at Tata Trusts, shares her insights in understanding these changes. Bengaluru came alive with ideas and imagination on November 3rd, as Nobel Prize Dialogue India 2025, in an exclusive partnership with the Tata Trusts, brought together two extraordinary laureates, global thinkers, and India’s most passionate youth at the Indian Institute of Science. With the theme, #TheFutureWeWant, they explored questions like—How can hope steer development? How do we build a future that is inclusive and sustainable, while navigating the appropriate balance between tradition and innovation? Every conversation, every exchange of curiosity reminded us that the future will not simply be handed to us—we must actively co-create it through our actions and ideas. Today's questioners will be tomorrow's changemakers. For the Tata Trusts, this dialogue echoes a century-long commitment to advancing knowledge, and we remain committed to creating more platforms that bridge the gap between science and society, shaping a more empowered and inclusive tomorrow. #NobelPrizeDialogueIndia2025 #TheFutureWeWant #NobelPrizeDialogue #TataTrusts

Esteemed laureates David MacMillan (Nobel Prize laureate in chemistry 2021), and James Robinson (Recipient of the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel) along with other eminent global thinkers, demonstrated how even the most complex ideas can be communicated with clarity, openness, and intellectual generosity. Together, the dialogue created a space for scientific thought to engage with young emerging Indian minds—building a more inclusive and powerful tomorrow. #NobelPrizeDialogueIndia2025 #TheFutureWeWant #NobelPrizeDialogue #TataTrusts
