I spent 7+ years at OYO Hotels managing finance, distribution, revenue management and direct marketing across multiple geographies for several hundred hotels. Each of the above functions might seem independent, but all of them are intertwined! Take for example, fixing rates across channels. It impacts all the teams simultaneously! Every month, I’d run 30–40% of my $10,000 credit card limit just to make test bookings on OTAs and direct channels :( We had to check, ➡️ how channels applied promotions ➡️ what rates flowed to the front end ➡️ how rates landed in the CRS ➡️ how taxes were calculated ➡️ how commissions were charged ➡️ how much funds were received the list never ended...... It often felt like whack-a-mole. You fix one issue, another would pop up. The issues came from (not necessarily only OTAs): 🔀 Mapping rate plans 🎁 Promotion stacking 💸 Commission passed to customers 🔓 B2B rates leaked into B2C channels 👥 “Member-only” rates available publicly ⚖️ Competitor rate adjustments 📱🌍 Mobile-only and country-specific pricing 💳 Wallet/cashback subsidies The result? Most of the time meant for growing the business was spent firefighting rate chaos. Broken communication across functions is partly to blame! If you were reading till now expecting a solution, unfortunately I don't have one. But you can share your experience that might solve some of the problems(if not all) for someone who might need it. 1. Hotels in South India saw the highest year-on-year gains in RevPar (revenue per available room) among the top cities in CY 24 and the growth momentum is continuing this year too as demand outstrips supply. Building luxury properties and generating a revenue cycle is feasible today. The actual gap lies in the middle of the hospitality chain, where the space for clean, safe, and well-run hotels is in the ₹4,000-₹6,000 range. This gap is not due to a demand issue; it is structurally difficult to deliver value at that level. Land prices, regulatory hurdles, and limited incentives leave very little room for viable mid-scale hospitality. That is precisely where the opportunity lies. To scale Delhi's tourism ecosystem, we need to create room for quality mid-scale stays, the kind that aren't extravagant but dependable. Other states have already taken this step, and Delhi has every reason to catch up.
