In December 2024, Maruti Suzuki maintained its leading position in the Indian passenger vehicle market, achieving significant growth across various segments. The company’s domestic sales increased by 24% year-on-year, with small car sales, including models like the Swift and Alto 800, rising by 29%, marking the first growth in that segment in 20 months. Tata Motors secured the second position, surpassing Hyundai. The company registered a year-on-year growth of 1.7%, with sales of 44,221 units, and held a market share of 13.8%. Hyundai slipped to the third position, recording dispatches of 42,208 units, a 1.3% decline in domestic sales compared to the previous year. This decrease is attributed to increased competition from newer SUV models introduced by competitors like Mahindra & Mahindra. Overall, the Indian passenger vehicle market experienced an 11% increase in sales over December 2023, with approximately 321,000 units sold. This growth was driven by strong demand for SUVs and attractive year-end discounts offered by manufacturers.
