I recently visited the newly established Proton Beam Therapy Center at University of Tsukuba Hospital. The hospital also houses a pediatric department and is one of the few institutions in Japan capable of providing proton beam therapy for pediatric cancer patients—an area that requires exceptionally advanced and sensitive care. Proton beam therapy is a cutting-edge cancer treatment technology, and this facility represents the renewal of Japan’s first proton therapy center. Equipped with the latest irradiation technology that enables real-time monitoring of tumor position, it delivers radiation precisely to the tumor while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissue. This level of precision offers significant benefits for patients with deep-seated tumors such as liver cancer, as well as for pediatric cancer patients whose growing bodies require special care. The proton beam therapy system combines cutting-edge accelerator technology, which accelerates protons to approx. 60% of the speed of light to deliver them precisely to tumors within the body, with a precision control system equipped with two rotating gantry treatment rooms. This truly represents the forefront of Healthcare × Technology. We are committed to realizing a society free from the fear of cancer.
