Hamburg Pioneers Autonomous Public Transport Hamburg has taken a significant step into the future of urban mobility with the arrival of the first autonomous HOLON urban shuttle—a five-meter, barrier-free minibus capable of carrying up to 15 passengers at speeds of up to 60 km/h  . Key Developments: Test Operations Begin: Technical testing is scheduled to start in late summer 2025, covering routes from Stadtpark to the Elbe and Schlump to Wandsbek. Passenger rides are expected to begin in 2026  . ALIKE Project: This initiative pairs the HOLON shuttle with MOIA’s ID. Buzz AD shuttle to form an app-based, on-demand ridepooling system. Partners include HOCHBAHN, MOIA, HOLON (Benteler), Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), and the Hamburg transport authority (BVM). The project enjoys €26 million in federal funding and aims to reach SAE Level 4 autonomy  . Scaling Ambitions: Up to 20 autonomous vehicles are expected to be deployed during the project phase. The long-term vision foresees thousands of autonomous shuttles operating across Hamburg and potentially beyond by 2030. I am grateful for the opportunity to speak at the ITS World Congress 2025 in Atlanta and present the autonomous mobility pilots we're developing at Brussels Airport as part of Stargate - EU Green Deal. I shared how our airside autonomous shuttle trial helped us understand the rapid evolution of automated driving technology.   What became clear is that trust in autonomous mobility can only grow through collaboration—bringing together authorities, technology providers, and end users. This week UK Secretary of State Heidi Alexander from Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom and Germany’s Federal Minister of Transport Patrick Schnieder visited Hamburg to experience one of Europe’s most advanced test environments for autonomous ridepooling. Together with Hamburg’s Senator for Mobility Anjes Tjarks, they joined a demonstration ride in MOIA’s fully autonomous ID. Buzz AD. The test drive took place under real traffic conditions as part of ALIKE, a federally funded project aimed at integrating autonomous ridepooling into public transport – with the goal of improving accessibility and flexibility in urban and also rural areas. With strong political support and innovative partners like MOIA by Volkswagen, Hamburg is committed to shaping the future of mobility – responsibly, collaboratively and at scale.
