SASSCAL MANAGEMENT PAYS COURTESY VISIT ON NAMIBIAN PREMIER Windhoek, Namibia – 8 September 2025 – The Southern African Science Service Centre for Climate Change and Adaptive Land Management (SASSCAL) Management Team, led by its Executive Director Prof. Nelago Indongo, paid a courtesy visit to Namibia’s Prime Minister, Rt. Honourable Tjitunga Elijah Ngurare, to congratulate him on his appointment earlier this year🙌🇳🇦 The Prime Minister, who served as Vice Chairperson of the SASSCAL Governing #Board before taking office in March 2025, warmly welcomed the delegation. He recalled the achievements during his time on the Board, including Namibia's consistent financial contributions and funding for the construction of SASSCAL’s Regional Secretariat in Windhoek. Highlighting Namibia’s ratification of the SASSCAL Treaty, Hon. Ngurare called on all remaining member states to follow the example of Namibia and #Zambia in finalising the ratification process. He stressed that attaining international organisation status would unlock greater benefits and strengthen SASSCAL’s role in advancing regional science and innovation. The Prime Minister assured the delegation of his office’s support and encouraged the practical rollout of projects. He shared updates on Community Collaborative #Agricultural Projects in Otjombinde, where SASSCAL scholarship holders could carry out research and internships. He further urged SASSCAL to support soil testing, provide data for Namibia’s Early Warning System, and work with the Disaster Management Unit. Prof. Indongo, on behalf of SASSCAL member states, briefed the Prime Minister on the organisation’s #milestones and reaffirmed the commitment to work closely with the Office of the Prime Minister through the Namibia National Node Office. 🇿🇦🤝SASSCAL & South Africa Strengthen Climate Partnerships Prof. Nelago Indongo, Executive Director of SASSCAL, held a constructive meeting with South Africa’s Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSI), represented by Deputy Director-General Mr. Imran Patel, on 20 August 2025. During the meeting, Prof. Indongo highlighted key strategic focus areas of the SASSCAL 3.0 Strategy, which are aimed at strengthening regional capacity to address the impacts of climate change. Discussions covered the need for effective coordination of climate #data provision, Graduate Studies programmes at historically disadvantaged institutions, and initiatives to deepen strategic partnerships for climate resilience and land adaptation.
