  •  Australia is to introduce “no go” zones where development will not be allowed under sweeping reforms to the nation’s environment laws, Environment Minister Murray Watt has confirmed. The proposed changes will also create areas where projects can proceed without individual approvals, a move aimed at speeding u cumulative impacts of development on habitats rather than assessing projects individually. The model was a key recommendation of Graeme Samuel’s review, which found the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act was failing both the environment and businesses. Watt explained that upfront identification of “go” and “no-go” zones would reduce costs, prevent duplication, and accelerate approvals while safeguarding sensitive areas. p development and addressing delays that have hindered housing and renewable energy projects. ——— To continue reading, click the link in our bio ——— Follow us for more news updates #news #newsupdates #breakingnews #newspaper Environment Agency

  • Vape retailers and global online platforms such as Amazon and eBay will, for the first time, be required to pay for the recycling of the electronic products they sell, under new rules designed to tackle Britain’s mounting e-waste problem. The regulations, announced by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, recently expand the country’s waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) system to include disposable vapes as a standalone category. Officials said the move reflects the surge in popularity of single-use devices and the environmental hazards posed by the lithium batteries and copper they contain. Online marketplaces, long accused of sidestepping responsibility, must now register with the Environment Agency and report sales data to determine recycling fees. The shift places foreign sellers under the same obligations as UK based retailers, closing a loophole that critics say has undermined the waste management system for years.  ——— To continue reading, click the link in our bio ——— Follow us for more news updates #news #newsupdates #breakingnews #newspaper

  • European Union member states remain divided over key climate commitments just weeks before a United Nations deadline, raising fears that the bloc may weaken its position ahead of the crucial COP30 climate summit in Brazil. A leaked draft seen by the Guardian shows that the negotiating text contains blanks and placeholder language instead of concrete emissions reduction figures, a sign of ongoing disagreements between the European Commission and member states. Experts warn that the lack of defined targets undermines momentum at a time when only 28 of 196 countries have submitted new nationally determined contributions (NDCs). Niklas Höhne of the New Climate Institute described the situation as “extremely urgent,” stressing that EU leadership could trigger global action. The EU’s current commitment is a 55 percent reduction in emissions by 2030 compared with 1990 levels.  ——— To continue reading, click the link in our bio ——— Follow us for more news updates #news #newsupdates #breakingnews #newspaper

  • Rivers State in South South Nigeria is a major crude oil and gas producer. Hosting major assets like the Trans Niger Pipeline, the NLNG, and the Bonny Oil Export Terminal where Nigeria’s crude is sold in the international market, and several oil and gas production assets, Rivers State has had its fair share of the environmental crisis arising from oil extractivism in the Niger Delta region. In 2022, an air pollution referred to as black soot hit the state. The crisis was linked to massive environmental pollution arising from activities of illegal oil bunkering and the burning of ceased products by security agencies. Other significant factors linked to the air pollution, included gas flaring by oil companies, and burning of tires, especially at night. “I remember vividly when there was a trace of the sooth in the atmosphere. I personally went to see the former commissioner back then, Prof (Mrs) Roseline Konya, she assured me that her ministry, the Ministry of Environment, where she was the commissioner back then, would investigate and make sure that it didn’t spread,” said Ilanye Chapp-Jumbo, one of the campaigners against blacksoot in Rivers State, in an interview with NatureNews Africa reporter.  ——— To continue reading, click the link in our bio ——— Follow us for more news updates #news #newsupdates #breakingnews #newspaper TotalEnergies Seplat Energy Plc Seplat Petroleum Development Company Plc Chevron Shell Oando Plc Federal Ministry of Environment, Nigeria Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare Nigeria NOSDRA NOSDRA Nigeria Wike Nyesome Rotimi Amechi National Orientation Agency, Nigeria UniPort Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) Siminalayi Fubara Nnimmo Bassey Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, and Poverty Alleviation
