At UZMAR Shipyard in İzmit, Türkiye, we proudly marked the official delivery of five newly built tugboats to the KOTUG fleet: SD Wonder, SD Djoudj, SD Chatboul, SD Rosso, and SD Waalo. These cutting-edge vessels, each delivering 80 tonnes of bollard pull, will play a vital role in our long-term offshore terminal operations supporting advanced LNG infrastructure, four of them in Mauritania ans Senegal, and one in Congo. This milestone reflects more than the delivery of vessels, it represents engineering excellence, trusted partnership, and the future of maritime operations in West Africa. A milestone in the making. KOTUG CEO Ard-Jan Kooren and Sanmar A.S. CEO Ali Gürün visited the shipyard to witness the progress on a truly remarkable vessel: the world’s largest methanol-powered escort tug. Built by Sanmar and soon to be delivered to KOTUG Canada, this pioneering tug will operate in Canada, setting a new benchmark for sustainable towage and demonstrating what is possible when innovation meets responsibility. Together, we are shaping the future of the maritime industry—cleaner, stronger, and ready for tomorrow.

As Captain of the fully electric E-Pusher, Nelson Hoek is steering more than just a vessel — he’s navigating the frontlines of maritime innovation. “You press a button, and you’re good to go. Full power, no warm-up, no noise, no mess,” he says. It’s a shift he embraces with pride — a radical change from the diesel-powered engines he spent most of his career with. On board the E-Pusher, the difference is more than just technological. “It’s a cleaner, simpler life. No oil checks, no leaks, no constant maintenance. Just start, stop, and sail.” And with the near-silent operation of the electric motor, he and his crew can enjoy a conversation or music in the wheelhouse — something that was unthinkable in the roar of a traditional engine room. Still, Nelson admits that change comes with trade-offs. “Most of us grew up loving the sound of a roaring engine — it’s in our DNA,” he laughs. “But I’d be lying if I said I missed yelling all day. I used to go home shouting without realizing it — 85 decibels under your feet takes a toll.” For Nelson, sailing the E-Pusher means being part of something bigger — a cleaner, smarter, future-ready maritime world. “It’s a new way of working, and I’m proud to be part of it. It feels good to be behind the wheel of real innovation.”
