We are happy to contribute to this important project and, together with the other partners and contributors, support efforts to make the use of lithium-ion batteries safer.
𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐟 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧? 🔋 🌫️🔥 We’re proud to announce our partnership with the Electrochemical Safety Research Institute (ESRI) of UL Research Institutes on EDOT – Early Detection of Thermal Runaway – a research project aimed at making the use of Lithium-ion batteries safer. Thermal Runaway is one of the most serious risks in battery systems, potentially causing fires or explosions. EDOT explores detection technologies to identify early warning signs and provide real-time data for first responders. By detecting failure in its earliest stages, operators get time to act, evacuate, isolate, or prevent incidents altogether. The EDOT project explores how different detection technologies – gas, pressure, heat, and EIS – can operate independently or in combination to identify pre-failure stages. By understanding how gases vent, how heat builds, and how signals shift inside a battery, the project aims to give operators and first responders the time they need to act. The project runs from September 2024 to September 2026, funded by the Electrochemical Safety Research Institute (ESRI), with testing conducted in three stages: small-scale with synthetic battery vent gas, cell-level tests, and large-scale EV systems at the Battery Safety Lab in Borås, Sweden, a lab designed explicitly for safety-critical battery research with minimal environmental impact. The research team consists of Oskar Grönlund, Ola Willstrand, Ellen Scott, Christian Casanova, Karine Arrhenius, and Sandra Hvitt Hultmark from RISE Research Institutes of Sweden. Special thanks to our partners, UL Research Institutes and Electrochemical Safety Research Institute (ESRI), for funding the project, and collaborators, Sunlight Group, for providing battery cells for testing, Consilium Safety Group, LifeFinder, Insplorion AB, and Honeywell, for contributing with gas sensors, and Beving for supplying thermal and acoustic camera systems. Stay tuned for updates as EDOT progresses! #BatterySafety #ThermalRunaway #BatteryFires #LithiumIonBatteries
