The ASEAN century is here, according to Jimmy Koh, our Group Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Advisory’s Head of Network Partnerships and Strategic Marketing. As global supply chains shift and resilience becomes critical, ASEAN offers more than a “China+1” strategy — it offers connectivity, trust and growth. With a rapidly expanding middle class and rising investment in sectors like semiconductors, electric vehicle (EV) supply chains and critical minerals, ASEAN is emerging as both a production base and a dynamic consumer market. Economic corridors such as the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone and Batam-Singapore integration show what cross-border collaboration can achieve. Tap the link in comments to read Jimmy’s full article on this once-in-a-generation opportunity, and how we are helping businesses bridge opportunities through our regional network.

“Fate works in mysterious ways, even between father and son. Even though I only joined UOB this year, our connection goes all the way back to 10 years ago. Or rather, it was my son Ben who crossed paths with UOB. Back then, Ben specialised in science in school, and was set to pursue a safe and stable career path. But while he buried his head deep in books and papers, he could not bring himself to let go of his paint brushes. Ben has loved drawing and painting since young and could not imagine giving up on his passion. As a father, a part of me wanted him to go after what makes him truly happy, but to be honest, I couldn’t be sure that art – the road less travelled – was right for him. That led to quite the bit of tension between us. I remember unpleasant conversations around the dining table and uncomfortable silences during car rides. It was a stressful situation for the whole family. In 2015, Ben won his first art award at UOB’s Golden Garden Installation Art Award. He was so excited when he called me, and I remember thinking to myself, “Wow, this is how happy art makes him.” That moment was not just about a trophy, but his first-ever recognition and a sign to keep believing in his passion. It also marked the turning point for me as a parent. From then on, I let go of my doubts and stood behind his choice with patience and trust. Ben is now a designer working with art institutions around the world. UOB helped kickstart my son’s artistic journey, and now, I am starting a new chapter at UOB Hong Kong myself, with a mission to support families like ours and help them find confidence on their own journeys. Knowing that I get to help aspiring artists like Ben makes it so precious and close-to-heart.” – Arthur Lee, Relationship Management - Private Banking, UOB Hong Kong “Stories from UOB” is a series that spotlights our colleagues, customers and community partners as they share rich personal stories from our 90-year journey of doing Right By You.
