Today, we proudly join the nation in marking Merchant Navy Day by flying the Red Ensign across our ports. This day is an opportunity to honour the vital role that seafarers play in keeping the UK supplied and connected, as well as the incredible people who dedicate their careers to the sea. Did you know, for example, that 95% of everything that enters and leaves the UK does so by sea, including half of our food and feed needs? A notable feature of Merchant Navy Day is the awarding of the prestigious Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service to a small number of individuals who have made outstanding contributions to UK seafaring. We are delighted to share that one of only 12 recipients for 2025 is an ABP colleague: James Charles, one of our South Wales-based Pilots. James – a Master Mariner, Younger Brother of Trinity House, and a Lieutenant in the University Royal Navy Unit at HMS Cambria – has been awarded the medal for his exceptional services to education and training. Congratulations James! 🛟Did you know that the RNLI saved 437 lives in 2024? That’s more than one life saved for every day of the year. At Associated British Ports, we are proud to support this vital work with many of our colleagues volunteering for the RNLI but also through corporate sponsorship. Earlier this week, ABP Chief of Staff, Paul Bristowe had the pleasure of visiting the RNLI headquarters and training facility in Poole, where lifeboat volunteers from across the UK and Ireland are trained to become crew members. As part of the visit, he met with RNLI Chief Executive, Peter Sparkes and other members of the RNLI Senior Leadership team to discuss their exciting plans for the future, as well as safety and operational efficiency. Last year, to celebrate the RNLI’s 200th anniversary, ABP funded a new lifeboat to enter the charity’s fleet. ABP’s donation will be used to build a new D-class lifeboat, known as the workhorse of the RNLI, which will enable RNLI lifeboat crews to continue their vital work of saving lives at sea. As we near the bank holiday weekend, it’s important to remember that ports are not playgrounds. Stay safe. Choose lifeguarded beaches. Share this to protect lives. And, even if you are swimming at a lifeguarded beach, remember to #RespectTheWater and #FloatToLive. ✅ Tilt your head back with ears submerged ✅ Relax and try to breathe normally ✅ Move your hands and legs to help you stay afloat ✅ It's ok if your legs sink, we all float differently ✅ Once you're over the initial shock, call for help or swim to safety Remember it. Practise it. Share it. #WaterSafety #FloatToLive Rachel Hooper #PortNotPlaygrounds RNLI College #Lifeguards

With the heatwave tempting many to cool off, it’s time to separate fact from fiction about swimming in docks or ports. ❌ “It’s just like a beach.” ✅ Ports are industrial zones with regular ship movements, hidden dangers like underwater obstacles and sluices and entanglement hazards. ❌ “I’m a strong swimmer – I’ll be fine.” ✅ Even strong swimmers can be overwhelmed by cold water shock or unpredictable currents. ❌ “It’s quiet, there are no boats around.” ✅ Even if you can't see anything, ports operate 24/7, and there are hidden dangers underwater. Stay safe. Choose lifeguarded beaches. Share this to protect lives. #WaterSafety #Heatwave #FloatToLive
