Brexit 😬 Are we allowed to ask senior UK Government Officials about it? What a star ⭐ Fergus Harradence from Department for Business and Trade was with all the unprepped questions from a super informed Constructing Excellence audience. Construction and the Built Environment can be a jobs, growth and sustainability engine to cultivate. Is that how it is seen inside Whitehall? I had got views in advance on what to talk to Fergus about. Loads on UK Government Strategy, decision making and a concern that Construction and the Built Environment while twice as big as financial services 💷 and 4x the creative industries 🎥 does not have the corresponding voice, access and R&D support 🧱 🏗️ We covered Productivity, Technology, Culture, Standards, Skills, Supply Chains and Exports. The most promoted question in the room. "Could we reverse Brexit to help the sector?" Fergus has a huge portfolio and is a quality champion. It wasn't immediately clear reversing Brexit was within his remit. He did provide great insight that the UK has lost 370,000 jobs in the Construction sector in the last five years and that is dominated by retirement and ill health. Stressing this has been a demographic phenomenon (rather than a Brexit free movement one). With so many young people out of education, work and training this is a clear area to build skills and strengthen the talent pipeline. Lots to chew on. Great panels that followed. Plenty in the sector's gift to progress. BRE intends to increase our support to Constructing Excellence and members to help make this happen.
