The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) has summarized the wildfire year of 2025, main points being that: 🔥Globally, the vegetation fire activity was relatively low with 1380 megatonnes of carbon burnt and emitted up to November, compared to 1850 megatonnes during Jan-Nov 2024 🔥Nevertheless, several regions in the Northern Hemisphere saw severly increased wildfire activity 🔥In Europe, more vegetation was consumed by wildfires than ever recorded before. The overall consumption was dominated by the catastrophic wildfire on the Iberian Peninsula during August, where wildfires were driven by persistent heatwaves, extremely dry conditions and strong winds 🔥Across the eastern Mediterranean, wildfire activity during the summer was also exceptionally severe, with Greece and Turkey experiencing major outbreaks from late June into July, and Syria experiencing its highest August wildfire activity on record 🔥Canada experienced its third consecutive year with wildfires consuming much more vegetation than during any of the previous years. The consumption in 2025 “only” ~half of the extreme fuel consumption during 2023, but still twice as high than during the earlier record year, 2014 CAMS provides a 23-year near real-time dataset from its Global Fire Assimilation System (#GFAS), updated in near-real time & based on satellite observations of Fire Radiative Power (FRP). End of November, scientists from our partner Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC), the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts - ECMWF, Deutscher Wetterdienst, and The University of Bonn met at the latter for the annual RAINA project meeting - a look back at 2025 and ahead to 2026. New contacts from VDI/VDE Innovation + Technik GmbH also joined. RAINA, contributing to the 4-year EU WeatherGenerator project, advances extreme precipitation and storm forecasting. Highlights from 2025 include: prototyping WeatherGenerator for multi-modal inputs (e.g., IMERG) and testing embedding networks, developing test-time adaptation methods, integrating datasets and advancing downscaling applications, adapting operational verification routines. Congratulations to the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts - ECMWF on their 50-year anniversary! 🥳   Our Director-General, Phil Evans, was present in Reading this week to celebrate this remarkable milestone and to reflect on our long-standing partnership. ECMWF is a major user of EUMETSAT satellite data and products, which are essential inputs to its weather forecasting systems.   He also extended our deepest appreciation to Florence Rabier for her outstanding leadership as Director-General.
