One of those surprising facts that highlights how dramatically cultural norms and public health policies have changed over time. In France, until the mid-20th century, it was common for schoolchildren to be served wine or cider during lunch, especially in rural areas. This practice was rooted in longstanding cultural attitudes toward alcohol, where wine was seen as a natural part of daily life, even for children. It was not unusual for children to drink diluted wine (e.g., wine mixed with water), and in some schools, they were allowed up to half a liter per day. However, as the health effects of alcohol became better understood and concerns about alcoholism grew, especially after World War II, attitudes began to shift. The official ban came in 1956, when a law was passed prohibiting the consumption of alcohol by students under the age of 14. Later regulations expanded this to all minors. I’ve been recieving messages from friends and family asking if my loved ones in Pakistan are safe. They’ve heard the news, and I can feel the worry in their words. Yet, deep down, there’s a quiet faith that we’ll make it through. As the situation unfolds between Pakistan and India, there are unspoken words in my interactions with Indian friends and colleagues—a comfort given without any words. A shared understanding lingers—unspoken, but deeply felt. It's hard not to be troubled. Because no one wins in war. The real toll is on the people—the innocent, the public. I’ve had the privilege of working closely with Indian individuals and teams, and many of my dearest friends are from that side of the border. I can say with confidence: there is no war between the people. Right now, the uncertainty is overwhelming. All we can do is hope for peace and pray.
