It's seven years since I had the privilege of being appointed CEO at #Excellondon. As I reflect over this period, there are so many positive stand out moments, experiences and events. I've had the privilege of working with brilliant mentors (Kevin Murphy OBE, Lord Tom King), world-class colleagues at Excel London and ADNEC Group, amazing creative and professional organisers, suppliers, businesses, friends and JV partners from Mount Anvil, Marriott, Hilton & Levy to name just a few! It’s also been a pleasure to work with our colleagues from Newham, London & Partners, Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the GLA. All true partners contributing towards the 2,500+ large scale events and 20 million+ visitors that will have visited Excel over the last seven years generating a conservative £22.5bn of economic impact to the UK economy. A few notable business event related moments for me include: 2020 February - Meeting Pope Francis at the Vatican with fellow #UFI Industry CEOs to celebrate the importance and impact of business events globally 2020 March – Pandemic / global shutdown. Personal and professional challenge on an unprecedented level. The Nightingale Hospital at Excel opened supporting the Government response to Covid-19 which was later followed by the Vaccination Centre where 130,000+ Londoners were vaccinated 2021 July - Industry robustly rebounds. Excel re-opens for its first 'live' event #FormulaE broadcast to a global TV audience of 50 million. Closely followed by a successful International Confex marking the return of live events. We also acquired the Hilton DoubleTree hotel adding to the campus portfolio 2022 May - Elizabeth Line opened with its own dedicated station for Excel (Custom House). Visitor numbers spike upwards with 20% increase in dwell time. Transformational…for London and Excel 2024 July - #ImmerseLDN – the UK’s largest dedicated immersive entertainment district launches along 800m Excel Waterfront. Amazing new immersive experience content from Disney 100 years; Formula 1 Experience; Tutankhamun; Friends and Jurassic World to name but a few.. 2024 October – The acquisition of the iconic Business Design Centre to add to our growing venue portfolio. An amazing team & business 2025 July – Our new 25,000sqm expansion opens hosting its first event in July offering world class event infrastructure for London Overall, it's been a period of significant growth and investment; support from our owners (Humaid Al Dhaheri, in particular); of constant change & development; of challenge and corresponding individual & industry resilience (pandemic), but above all it has been a joy and pleasure to have worked with so many fabulous colleagues, partners, businesses and events and to have been able to play a role connecting so many lives and businesses.
