  • If you’ve ever inherited a financial model that made you want to pull your hair out, you know exactly what this means. We all build models in ways we've grown comfortable with—methods shaped by experience and what we've seen around us. But financial models aren’t just for us. They need to be shared with teams, investors, banks, and stakeholders. That’s where the FAST Standard comes in. Using FAST means models become easier to use, more accurate, consistent, and better for collaboration. It’s not about losing your style—it’s about speaking a common language everyone can read. Ready to stop wrestling messy models? What’s the biggest spreadsheet nightmare you’ve faced? #WeAreGridlines #FASTStandard #FinancialModelling #ModelAudit

  • We’ve all met a Frankenmodel. 80 tabs. Names like “v3_final_FINAL_revised”. Dead sheets stitched together from old projects. Formulas that only work on a full moon. It lumbers from deal to deal, struggling under the weight of broken links and hidden hardcodes. Nobody wants to touch it, but somehow it lives on. If this creature is lurking in your files: You can’t tame it. You have to take it apart and rebuild something clean. …And finally put the monster to rest. Tell us, which excel monsters do you most want to slay?

  • People assume financial models are neutral. They’re not. Every model reflects choices. What to include. What to leave out. What gets forecast. What gets fixed. Because behind every model is a backstory. And that means: judgement, priorities and yes, sometimes bias. The problem is, once it’s clean, formatted and footed in the spreadsheet, most people stop asking questions. And that’s the risk. We’d love to know your thoughts. #WeAreGridlines #FinancialModelling

Post-Geography World We’re living in a post-geographic world. This is not news. As we all know, the shift to online, distributed work happened almost overnight — but the structural impact is still playing out. Many businesses still carry the legacy of location-based models: Local teams. Local P&Ls. Regional silos. In some sectors, that still makes sense. But in infrastructure, where project sponsors operate across regions, things will need to change. It’s not unusual to see the same team working on deals in the Americas, Europe, and Asia. Expertise and judgment now flow across borders far more fluidly than before. Yet advisory support is often fragmented and globally inconsistent. The advisory model built on territorial entities and partner ownership may struggle to adapt. Some firms — including ours — were built global from the start, but we can still do more. It’s time to figure out as an industry how we can optimise knowledge sharing and collaboration across borders practically in ways that can keep up with what is now technologically possible. We need to get the best people on the right deals with the right skillset, so they can deliver efficiently wherever they are. We need to quickly learn and share lessons between jurisdictions, making global delivery of deals faster and more efficient. It’s through harnessing this capability that we can really help to drive global development and accelerate delivery. The World can’t wait.

  • If you spend most of your day in Excel, the right add-ins can turn hours of manual work into minutes and help you avoid the errors that derail models. From faster navigation and audit tools to seamless links with PowerPoint and live market data, these add-ins can make your spreadsheets faster, cleaner, and more reliable. Here are 9 Excel add-ins we think every modeller should know. #WeAreGridlines #FinancialModelling #ExcelAddIns

In our latest post, we share what separates effective M&A models from the rest.
