Interesting Fact of the Day! 💡 Did you know that the earliest documented surgical procedure dates back to approximately 6500 BC? Archaeological evidence suggests that ancient civilisations practised trepanation, a procedure involving the drilling or scraping of the skull, likely to treat head injuries or relieve pressure. This remarkable feat demonstrates the ingenuity and resourcefulness of early healers, who laid the groundwork for modern surgical techniques. As we delve deeper into the history of medicine, we can appreciate the profound advancements that have transformed surgery into a highly specialised and life-saving discipline. The optimal timing for tracheostomy in intubated patients In 2020, a study investigated the optimal timing for performing tracheostomy in intubated patients. The findings revealed that early tracheostomy, defined as being conducted within the first seven days of intubation, correlates with a reduction in both the duration of mechanical ventilation and the length of stay in the intensive care unit (ICU). Conversely, tracheostomy performed after seven days is associated with a higher incidence of complications. This research underscores the critical importance of timely intervention in critical care environments to enhance patient outcomes.
