About us

NATO Maritime Command (MARCOM) is the central command of all NATO maritime forces and the Commander MARCOM is the prime maritime advisor to the Alliance. Like its land and air counterparts (LANDCOM & AIRCOM), MARCOM answers directly to NATO’s Allied Command Operations (ACO) which is located in Mons, Belgium. Located in Northwood, outside London, United Kingdom, it is composed of a multinational headquarters manned by 300 officers, petty officers and civilians from most NATO countries. MARCOM includes three subordinate commands co-located in Northwood for coordination on specific areas of maritime engagement and Allied forces when assigned to NATO. These commands are as follows: Submarines NATO, which directs submarines under NATO operational control; Maritime Air NATO, which directs the activities of Maritime Patrol Aircraft under NATO operational control; and the NATO Shipping Centre, which is a direct liaison with the wider commercial shipping community. MARCOM also leads four Standing Maritime Groups which are a multinational, integrated maritime force made up of vessels from various allied countries. These vessels are continuously available to NATO to perform different tasks ranging from participating in exercises to conducting operational missions. These groups provide NATO with a continuous maritime capability for operations and other activities in peacetime and in periods of crisis and conflict. They also help to establish Alliance presence, demonstrate solidarity, conduct visits to different countries, support transformation and provide a variety of maritime military capabilities to ongoing missions. The number of ships in each group varies based on the requirements for the group and the availability of Allied Navy ships. • As Baltic Sentry passes its one-year milestone, it is an opportunity to revisit the purpose and impact of this NATO maritime initiative in the Baltic Sea. Baltic Sentry provides a persistent Allied maritime presence, enhancing situational awareness, strengthening cooperation, and delivering reassurance to Allies and partners in the region. Through routine exercises, coordination, and information sharing, NATO naval forces continue to contribute to maritime security, stability, and freedom of navigation in the Baltic Sea. One year on, Baltic Sentry remains a clear demonstration of NATO’s commitment to collective defence and regional assurance. #WeAreNATO #BalticSentry #BalticSea #MaritimeSecurity

  • Innovation, particularly in autonomy, data-driven decision-making, and undersea awareness, is now central to maintaining maritime security and ensuring no threat goes unseen or unanswered. Against this backdrop, MARCOM recently hosted the kick-off meeting of a new NATO/ACT led Beacon Project, Force Lethality Enhancement through Emerging Technologies–North (FLEET-North), bringing together teams from across the Alliance to advance innovation in the maritime and underwater domains. DCOM MARCOM, French Navy Vice Admiral Ludovic Poitou, addressed representatives from across the Alliance - including NATO Allied Command Transformation (ACT), MARCOM, NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), NATO DIANA, MARAIR, COMSUBNATO, the NATO Maritime Centre for the Security of Undersea Infrastructure, and the Confined Shallow Waters Centre of Excellence. Discussions focused on leveraging AI, robotics, autonomous systems, and space and cyber capabilities to strengthen Allied anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and maritime situational awareness (MSA) in increasingly complex operational environments. FLEET-North focuses on emerging technologies to deliver a scalable, multi-domain maritime awareness and warfighting support capability, ensuring that no adversary submarine or underwater vehicle can operate undetected in areas of strategic importance, including the North Atlantic and the Arctic. The ACT-driven project will integrate large numbers of autonomous systems across surface, subsurface, and air domains coupled with space and cyber capacities to augment legacy NATO and national forces. It accelerates innovation through rapid integration, experimentation and demonstration at scale. FLEET-North is a clear demonstration of NATO’s resolve to maintain its technological edge, strengthen deterrence, and ensure Allied forces remain dominant, agile and adaptable in an evolving security environment.

  • Marking one year of NATO’s increased presence in the Baltic Sea through Baltic Sentry. For the past 12 months, Allied forces have stood watch to safeguard the region, strengthening maritime security and protecting vital infrastructure. The results speak for themselves: fewer incidents involving damaged undersea cables, faster responses to suspicious maritime activity, and stronger cooperation and information sharing across the Alliance. Above all, Baltic Sentry has demonstrated Allied cohesion and resolve. NATO present in the Baltic. Stronger together.

  • Latvia has formally handed over command of Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group One to Poland during a Change of Command Ceremony in Riga, marking the continued rotation of leadership among NATO Allies and the Alliance’s shared commitment to maritime security. Under the leadership of Latvian Navy Commander Jānis Auce, SNMCMG1 conducted extensive mine countermeasures and maritime security operations across the Baltic Sea, playing a key role in Baltic Sentry - safeguarding critical undersea infrastructure and maintaining a persistent and credible deterrent presence. The group also took part in multiple multinational exercises, strengthening interoperability and operational readiness among Allied naval forces. With contributions from 11 NATO nations, SNMCMG1 demonstrated Allied unity, readiness, and resolve in the Baltic Sea. As Poland assumes command, the Task Group remains prepared to respond rapidly to emerging challenges and continues to support NATO’s collective defence and regional stability. • The Italian Navy marked a Change of Command for Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group Two (SNMCMG2) during an official ceremony at the Taranto Naval Base, underscoring NATO’s enduring commitment to maritime security and collective defence in the Mediterranean. During the ceremony, Italian Navy Captain Fortunato Genovese formally handed over command to Hellenic Navy Captain Dimitrios Karamoutzogiannis. The event was attended by senior military leaders, including US Navy Rear Admiral Bret Grabbe, Commander Submarines NATO at Allied Maritime Command, and highlighted the seamless continuity of leadership within one of NATO’s key standing naval forces. Over the past six months, command of the group was exercised from two Italian Navy flagships - first ITS Foscari and later ITS Thaon di Revel. The multinational task group brought together naval units from Greece, Italy, Spain, and Türkiye, operating as a fully integrated force to deliver effective mine countermeasures and maritime security operations. • NATO Shipping Centre (NSC) has a vital role in supporting Allied maritime operations. The NSC serves as the primary interface between NATO military authorities and the international merchant shipping community, enabling the exchange of information that enhances situational awareness and safety at sea. Operating under Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM), the NSC acts as a central hub that supports Allies through coordination, communication, and cooperation — strengthening maritime security across NATO’s areas of responsibility. #WeAreNATO
