Probably the single most effective thing that we can do to improve the fish populations in Northumberland’s rivers is to ensure that there are as few man-made barriers to migration as possible. These are just two examples from opposite ends of the spectrum from recent travels around the county. How much useable habitat is denied to salmon, trout and other species by unsustainable engineering practices.

Over the last couple of weeks, I have spent time on three very different watercourses in Northumberland. Two of these can be classed as lowland streams in agricultural land whilst the third is an upland watercourse running through commercial forestry. The thing that they all have in common is that they have been heavily modified by land drainage practices both instream and throughout the wider catchment. Much of this work was begun in the early 1800s for agricultural improvement, greatly exacerbated by the essential drive for food production during and after WW2. Forestry tax incentives continued the drive for productivity through the 60s and 70s leaving many watercourses in a degraded state. This situation led me to think that over 200 years of intensive management is not going to be turned around any time soon. Decades would be optimistic and that will rely on long term and clear government policy which seems a long way off. Proportionally, if the level of funding that got our rivers into their current state was applied to their recovery, it would still take a very long time to make a significant difference. That’s not to say we shouldn’t try and there are great things being done across the country but let’s be realistic with ourselves about the time, resources and money this will take.
