Piyush (front left in the team photo) joined Serco's Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) Safety and Incident Management Services (SIMS) Team in 2018. Starting as a casual SIMS Patrol Officer, his dedication saw him quickly progressing to a full-time role, followed by promotion to Acting Team Leader, Emergency Management Advisor, and – his current role – Acting Operations Manager, SIMS & the Emergency Management Unit, working alongside Rad De Luca, SIMS Operations Manager. While many of us wind down for the break, Piyush and his team will continue to be a reassuring presence 24/7 during the holidays, patrolling campus grounds and providing swift, effective emergency support for the safety of patients, staff and visitors. “An average day in SIMS during the holiday season is highly dynamic and operationally critical,” says Piyush. “We respond to 25 incidents daily on average: fire alarms, acts of aggression, complex threats like medical emergencies or safety incidents. A hospital setting presents many hazards; agility, speed and safety are essential.” These holidays, Piyush’s team will ensure: 📹 Continuous monitoring of 630 CCTV cameras; 🚨 Ongoing situational awareness and immediate response for fire protection systems and duress alarms; 🚁 Safe departures and landings for helicopter emergency retrievals; and 🪪 Secure access control for high-#security areas, plus lockdown readiness. “Most rewarding is our work’s impact and purpose, knowing our actions directly safeguard lives and enable critical #healthcare services to function without disruption,” Piyush says. “I greatly value the teamwork and trust within SIMS during high-pressure situations, where collaboration and quick decision-making make a tangible difference. “Working through the holidays means being part of the critical backbone of hospital operations. While most of the community is celebrating, we ensure the hospital remains safe and prepared for emergencies. “It’s a period of heightened responsibility as patient care cannot pause, and risks often increase during holidays due to higher visitor numbers and holiday season-related presentations.” During this time, Piyush and his 75-strong team will find alternative ways to observe the season. Team meals and festive treats will ensure connection and morale during shifts, and they’ll balance professional and personal commitments by making time around Christmas and New Year’s Day to celebrate with loved ones. Looking ahead, Piyush shares that in 2026, SIMS will respond to and manage an average of 5,000 Code Black emergencies and over 2,500 proactive interventions to bring escalating situations safely under control. “Each of these cases reflect situations where we’re trusted to protect staff and patients, helping ensure vulnerable patients are supported,” Piyush says. Please join Serco in thanking Piyush and SIMS for their service to the WA community all year round. ❤️ #SercoAsPac #ImpactABetterFuture South Metropolitan Health Service
