The cost-of-living and energy crises brought the issue of fuel poverty into sharp focus. For an increasing number of people, energy bills are a source of financial stress and insecurity; however, the full extent of fuel poverty is still poorly understood. Dr Torran Semple's ongoing collaboration with Smart Data Research UK's Financial Data Service (FINDS) is putting this potential to the test. The study uses FINDS’ Income Volatility dataset, created with Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF), which includes approximately 1.11 million customers, to explore whether this vast financial footprint dataset can give us a clearer, more up-to-date picture of financial precarity, especially in the context of fuel poverty. What might the Autumn Budget 2025 mean for people’s finances, and how can we track its impact? This year’s Budget brings a mix of changes, from lifting the two-child benefit cap to increases in the National Living Wage and State Pension. While many measures won’t take effect until April 2026 or later, they have the potential to influence the financial resilience of people across the UK. As Smart Data Research UK's Financial Data Service, we’re making anonymised financial data available so researchers can observe the impacts of these changes as they happen. By tracking economic wellbeing metrics such as income volatility, financial resilience and more, smart financial data can help build a clearer picture of how people and businesses respond to policy changes over time. Whether it’s understanding how lifting the two child benefit cap helps families or how wage rises interact with variable incomes, smart financial data offers a way to assess these effects with more precision. For those who will be exploring the Budget’s impact on economic wellbeing, detailed datasets and microdata are available through our FINDS data catalogue. With the launch of the Economic Wellbeing Explorer into England and Wales, the nationwide comparison helps us to visualise trends that are occurring across Great Britain, and to see where there are regional specific changes. Both Scotland and Wales had a slight decrease in account holders having low emergency resilience, having less than £100 in their bank account, while England had a slight increase. And whilst Wales has the highest rate of low emergency resilience at 38%, at a lower regional level people living in the North East of England have the lowest financial resilience in Great Britain at 43.35%.
