  • TFN SPOTTED: Social media gave rise to dupe culture - Can it also undo the damage? Independent designers are increasingly speaking out against the fast-fashion giants that replicate their work for profit, and Marcelo Gaia, founder of New York label Mirror Palais, has been the latest to be speak out on the topic. Since launching his brand in 2019, Gaia states that around 20% of his bestselling styles have been replicated by platforms like Shein, Amazon and TikTok Shop, often promoted by influencers who earn commissions on dupes sold for a fraction of the price. Gaia says this ecosystem leaves smaller brands operating as “unpaid research and development departments” for large-scale retailers who monitor what works and reproduce it cheaply, while consumers are left buying cheaper, lower-quality versions of carefully developed designs. While major players like Shein maintain that infringement is against their business model, the blurred line between ‘dupes’ and counterfeits creates a grey area where replication often goes unchallenged. What makes this moment significant, however, is that the very platforms driving dupe culture are now being used to call it out. Designers like Gaia suffering the implications, are taking to Instagram and TikTok not only to showcase their collections, but also to highlight the ethical issues surrounding imitation. The question now is whether consumer attitudes will shift, and if anything will be done to put an end to the cycle. What can be done for smaller brands and designers to prevent dupe culture from carrying on unchecked? How can the wider industry ensure originality is better protected? Let us know what you think. • IN THE NEWS: Adidas Apologise to Indigenous Mexican Community Over Sandal Design - Is Cultural Appropriation Becoming Fashion’s Bad habit? adidas has travelled to Oaxaca, Mexico, to personally apologise for a sandal-inspired design released in collaboration with Willy Chavarria after facing accusations of cultural appropriation. The controversy centred around the “Oaxaca Slip On,” which closely resembled the traditional handmade huarache sandals of Villa Hidalgo Yalalag, a small Indigenous community. Following public criticism, including remarks from Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum, Adidas executives met with local leaders and residents issuing a formal apology and committing to explore future collaborations that recognise and respect the community’s heritage. The situation reflects a wider challenge in fashion… how global brands draw inspiration from traditional craftsmanship without giving proper recognition or compensation. Recently, Prada was also called out for replicating Indian footwear styles such as the Kolhapuri chappal, raising further questions about where inspiration ends and appropriation begins. What do you think? Does fashion need new frameworks to protect cultural heritage from being exploited? Is there more the industry should do to ensure communities are credited and compensated when their heritage influences design? Let us know your thoughts👇 📷 Marco Ovando / Adidas / BBC #fashionnews

  • POLL: Is Grey The New Black? Black has long been fashion’s favourite neutral, but this season grey appears to be taking the crown. Prada, Miu Miu and The Row are just a few embracing grey as the go-to neutral for Fall/Winter 2025, with tailored coats, knitwear and accessories. Can you see grey taking the lead as fashion’s staple shade? Could black ever truly be replaced? Let us know what you think 👇

Known for its functional outerwear, The North Face lends its performance-driven heritage to the collection, while Aimé Leon Dore contributes its signature elevated aesthetic, rooted in timeless New York style. Accessories and footwear round out the range, with backpacks, bags, and an alpine shoe updated in leather for a balance of sophistication and utility.
