The Skill Mill is a multi-award-winning social enterprise which provides employment opportunities for young people.
About us
The Skill Mill is a fast growing, award winning Social Enterprise which provides employment for young ex-offenders in watercourse and horticulture services across the north of England. Since 2013 we have been committed to ending the revolving cycle of crime, by undertaking both water and land based management, helping to reduce flood risk and improve the local environment. This creates a range of social and environmental benefits by directly involving local people in the delivery of the services. The reduction of re-offending, increase in community safety, and the rise in employment and education levels of young people are just a few of the benefits. Being a social enterprise means The Skill Mill is ‘Not for Profit’, this brings significant added value making us unique. Working alongside a range of partners from the public and private sectors is key to our sustainability. Whilst demonstrating the importance of innovative thinking, increase engagement, participation, employability and educational levels of young people and move them closer to long term sustainable employment.

We're absolutely buzzing to announce that The Skill Mill won Environmental Social Enterprise of the Year at the Social Enterprise UK Awards! 🏆 Thank you to Social Enterprise UK for organising the Festival of Hope and to Landmarc Solutions for sponsoring the award, to the friends and partners who joined us at London's Southbank Centre last night, and to everyone who's supported our mission. This award belongs to every single young person who's pulled on their work boots, picked up litter from waterways, planted trees and hedges, built fish passes, cleared river footpaths, and shown the world what second chances really look like. This award also recognises our day-to-day environmental work alongside our young people, as well as organising World Cleanup Day Global across the UK every 20th September – a reflection of our mission to create healthier environments and empower young people to lead positive change. We also want to congratulate the wonderful finalists in this category – it's been an honour to be shortlisted alongside you. Seagulls Reuse Ltd - congrats on recognised as Highly Commended! River Health has been one of our signature projects in Northumberland, delivered in partnership with NORTHUMBERLAND RIVERS TRUST and funded through the The National Lottery Heritage Fund. River Health included work on the rivers Lyne, Wansbeck, Blyth, Pont and Seaton Burn. The young people in our Northumberland team built fish passes, planted trees and improved river footpaths. 🌳🌲🌊 🏔️ 🐟 🌊 🌳 In total, our teams built and repaired 20 fish passes, building on a previous project also funded through the Heritage Lottery Fund. These fish passes help salmon, sea trout and eels migrate to their spawning grounds. The project ran for 18 months and finished in 2024. 💚 River Health was so special because it delivered benefits on multiple levels. Not only did it give young people transferrable skills and experience, but it also improved access to green and blue spaces for the community, contributing to improved physical and emotional wellbeing through a social prescribing component with local GPs. David Edgar, the supervisor of our Northumberland team, together with Bradley Postlethwaite, one of The Skill Mill's young people who became a team member, delivered the project with the team of young people. Together, they also named each of the fish passes. 🔎 Slide through the carousel to see the fish passes (and their names!) and learn more about the River Health project. ----------------- The Skill Mill is a multi-award-winning social enterprise that exclusively employs young people who've been repeatedly involved in the criminal justice system. We actively reduce reoffending whilst increasing engagement, participation, employability and educational levels to improve young people's life chances. Here's something exciting – the Rubbish Collection that actually helps remove rubbish. We're thrilled to unveil our collaboration with DUDE, a creative agency based in London. DUDE has created a stunning fashion collection inspired by rubbish found in London's canals. It's a 14-piece collection born from the litter they spotted on their daily walk to the office along Regent's Canal. ✨ Shop the collection at this link: www.rubbishcollection.org We absolutely love the Rubbish Collection – not only because it looks incredible, but for the impact it creates. When you purchase a piece, you're supporting the environmental work we do with young people and volunteers during World Cleanup Day UK. We're also delighted that DUDE joined forces with us and got their hands dirty cleaning up Hackney Marshes for World Cleanup Day UK. Huge thanks to the DUDE team for making this project happen 🤩 We highly recommend everyone checks out the Rubbish Collection!
