I really enjoyed the event, it was a momentous moment of celebration and I will remember it for the rest of my life.

London is the third-largest global hub for game developers, following Los Angeles and San Francisco. There's a large amount of established studios, experienced talent and world class education, however, the UK games market has reported over 19,000 redundancies in the past two years following over-expansion and subsequent scaling back. In contrast the gaming sector in China is experiencing significant growth. It was worth $66.13 billion USD in 2024 and is expected to rise to $95.51 billion by 2029, with mobile and e-sports being the biggest areas. At the moment, studios are mainly designing games for the local market, hoping for success and only then looking at regulation and localisation in Asia, which ignores Chinese market trends, cultural preferences and consumer behaviour. There's a fantastic opportunity for studios to utilise experts early in the dev cycle to design ground up with the market in mind, rather than taking it to market with a hope and see approach. There is also great potential for Chinese investment as designing specifically for this market reduces investment risk. Layoffs, studio closures, projects getting canned—there’s no sugarcoating it, it’s been rough. But here’s the thing: this industry is built on resilience. The UK has been at the heart of gaming for decades, and that hasn’t changed. Some of the biggest games in the world have come from UK studios—GTA, Total War, Sea of Thieves, Football Manager—and even with all the chaos, there’s still so much talent, creativity, and innovation happening here. The indie scene is thriving, with studios making waves on their own terms. New studios are being formed by people who’ve been through the storm and are ready to build something better. Big players still see the value in UK talent, and investment isn’t disappearing—it’s shifting. And most importantly, people still love making and playing games. Yes, times are tough. But this industry has been through tough times before, and it’s still here. We adapt. We rebuild. We create.
