Lotus. JLR. Major UK suppliers. They're all cutting thousands of jobs. What's happening in UK Automotive? The numbers tell the story: Multiple OEMs have announced redundancies in the past quarter. Production lines that were retooled for EV manufacturing are running way below capacity. Veterans with 20+ years under their belt are being let go. I spoke with a Lotus engineer last week. Two decades in the industry. He told me the current atmosphere is "the darkest he's seen." The pattern is clear across the sector: These companies poured billions into EV development based on projected demand that simply hasn't shown up. Traditional engine development was scaled back or even abandoned. Everyone assumed consumer adoption would take off rapidly. The reality check: → EV sales are missing their targets → Regulatory frameworks keep shifting → Charging infrastructure is nowhere near ready for mass adoption → Supply chain constraints on battery materials are still a nightmare → Consumers are more price-sensitive than anyone expected What's happening now: Several manufacturers are taking another look at hybrid technologies and cleaner combustion engine fuels and technology. The same technologies that many had written off as just a stepping stone. The knock-on effects are huge. When OEMs struggle, the entire supply chain feels it. Tier 1 and 2 suppliers. Engineering contractors. Testing facilities. Everything's connected. This whole situation raises some big questions about strategic planning in capital-intensive industries. How do companies balance political and regulatory pressures with what the market actually wants? When does being an early adopter become jumping the gun? Shell has developed a new bit of tech that could help electric cars charge in 10 minutes. It’s working with UK engineering and motorsport outfit RML Group to fill the tiny gaps, apertures and cavities in a small 34kWh battery with proprietary ‘gas-to-liquid’ thermal fluid that keeps the cells cool enough so they can cope with a super high flow of electricity. Shell believes a battery with this fluid can be recharged from 10% to 80% in under 10 minutes. Backed by £15m in government funding, Toyota will lead a £30m project to boost zero-emission vehicle innovation in the UK.
