In a welcome break from more challenging sustainability news, the Climate Change Committee published its latest carbon budget last week, setting out clear recommendations for the UK’s pathway to net zero. In what is an internationally admired piece of work, it cites the importance of public policy support as the main driver for progress, with private finance rightly singled out as a key enabler. Alongside practical recommendations including scaling electrification and nature-based solutions, the CCC reiterates the economic benefits of transitioning to net zero and shares that the costs could be significantly lower than previously thought. We are seeking charitable applicants seeking around £20,000 for their projects that will: - Support access to nature, and/or - Support employability and skills relating to nature You will be a charity or organisation conducting charitable activity. We will prioritise our funding to those with income below £500,000 pa (averaged over three years) and where our funding will make up the majority (>50%) of project costs. The application process is hopefully light touch, we know smaller charities don't have huge resources. A new PMM: Public Money & Management article argues that current local authority financial reports fail to reflect the issues that the public cares about — such as social justice, environmental sustainability and community wellbeing — and that this mismatch undermines both accountability and trust. Bernard Kofi Dom, Ph.D, André Feliciano Lino and Ileana Steccolini show that what governments choose to report shapes what governments actually prioritize. When local accounts focus only on levels of spending and compliance, they inevitably marginalize values such as equity, resilience and legitimacy. In the context of the cost-of-living crisis, climate pressures, fragile local finances, and an ongoing crisis of trust in public institutions, conventional financial reporting is no longer sufficient. The authors call for broader, more inclusive, digitally enabled accountability. The authors call for a shift away from purely financial, compliance-driven reporting toward citizen-facing, participatory and digitally enabled accounts. For practitioners in local government, public finance, audit, and civic technology, this is not a theoretical exercise — it is a practical blueprint for rebuilding trust and governing under pressure. I have just returned from a wonderful two days of UNEP-WCMC #NatureActionDialogues in Cambridge. A few key insights I took away: 1. Hearing from David Obura & Paula Harrison on the recent IPBES reports that have come out. Having been involved with IPBES from it's conception (and birth!) I was struck how far it has come and the quality of the reports it is producing. The recent #Nexus assessment on biodiversity, water, food and health with it's 70 response options demonstrating where you can achieve win-wins was a particular highlight to dive into (see diagram below). The upcoming business and biodiversity assessment now is eagerly awaited! 2. Scaling finance for nature (including nature based solutions) remains challenging but is essential for us to crack. Great and thought provoking presentations from Paulina Villalpando Lorda Greta Talbot-Jones Helen Avery and Helen Crowley on this topic - including how we can improve the flow of private finance into the implementation of NBSAP's (national biodiversity strategies and action plans). 3. The complexities of accessing nature data continues to be a key challenge for companies, as are issues such as navigating the myriad of nature frameworks, standards, regulations (and metrics!). Simplification will be key. Great presentations throughout the week from Nature Positive Initiative Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) and from Monika Dyndo on their nature data journey. 4. Strong support for integrated climate and nature transition plans with great presentations from Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) CDP WWF and World Economic Forum on their work in this space which were brought to life with great case studies from Thomas Viegas and Stefanie Vermaesen. The excellent work by Vassilis Gkoumas and team on developing out nature positive pathways for sectors will be absolutely critical to progress in this space. 5. Being a "Nature Lead" in an organisation can sometimes feel like a lonely and quite overwhelming role. The importance of events such as these to bring people together across sectors (not only within business sectors but also across eNGO's, UN, Government, academia) are fundamental to the success or failure of our efforts to conserve nature & biodiversity. But they are also fundamental for our own resilience and well-being. Thank you Neville Ash Matt Jones Stacey Baggaley Nadine McCormick and all of the organisers for curating this event to bring us altogether! My final reflection is from the very wise Abyd Karmali OBE who reminded us to survive in this sector you need the unique combination of zest, zeal and zen. Free peer mentoring on nature-based solutions is available for anyone based in the North West of England; please share with anyone who might be interested. Ashden has launched a new peer-mentoring scheme as part of its Resilient Roots programme. Yesterday we had our first induction session with six brilliant mentors. They come from local authorities, charities and not for profit organisations and, between them, can offer support on securing funding, partnership working, community engagement, project management, planning processes and much more. Our first six mentees have already been matched with a mentor and we now have space for an additional six mentees. Mentees benefit from free, one-to-one support from a nature-based solutions expert (of up to 3 days, spread over a number of weeks/months as needed). Mentors can act as a sounding board, sharing their expertise and personal experiences and providing valuable insights to tackle complex challenges more effectively.
