If you're wondering why industry is re-evaluating what design is worth, a strong hint appeared in a very influential tech newsletter this week... (link to article in comments) Stratechery is one of the most popular tech newsletters: Ben Thompson's sharp analysis is worth reading, even if you don't agree with it. He understands meta-trends and how tech leaders think like very few others do. They're listening to him very carefully. In "AI's Uneven Arrival" - he makes the point that most organisations aren't remotely ready to transfer tasks from humans to AI, even if the AI could do them - there's too much tacit knowledge. And then comes the unfortunate analogy from a old talk by Keith Rabois at Stanford: "most people are ammunition, not barrels" - meaning, a small number of irreplaceable people set direction (barrels), but people who are likely to be replaced by AI are just getting jobs done (ammunition). Here's the kicker: Rabois specifically calls out designers as people who slow things down: "You hire more designers, you definitely don’t get more done, you get less done in a day." This Rabois quote is from 10 years ago; it's not a new attitude. But it just got repeated in one of the most influential tech newsletters out there, which is why I'm sharing it. If this is how business sees design, we better have a pretty good counter-argument.

My column on today's NDA newsletter, which looked at the impact of AI on agencies, has provoked quite a response, so I thought I'd pop it here as well. My god, this industry loves some hyperbole! This week, my LinkedIn feed has been full of 'experts' predicting the end of the agency model within two years due to the impact of AI. Obviously, many of these experts are peddling some AI solution, but it was alarming to see how many clever people jumped on the bandwagon and agreed. Let's look at what will happen. Agency services will change, and those which can be automated will be. If your agency has been relying on that, then yeah, you might have an issue. If your agency doesn't offer a strategy or the value of your team's experience, then it's time to re-evaluate your offering. Agencies need to move beyond carrying out commoditised services and advance further up the value chain. AI isn't going to take away the need for external resources. It's going to change the type of help businesses need and agencies offer, shifting away from tasks in-house people didn't want to do, to becoming more trusted advisors and partners. So, as ever with digital media hyperbole, there is no absolute answer; there are nuances, there is no black and white, just shades of grey. Those of us with those shades of grey in our hair ( only facial in my case) will know that and be thinking that, excellent, my time has come.
