US financial sector leaders have been preparing for Donald Trump’s return by quitting climate-focused alliances en masse. But this exodus has been a long time in the making. If Gfanz and its alliances are now to be focused on discussion and collaboration around mobilising capital — rather than setting standards and monitoring progress towards net zero commitments — that may not be such a bad thing. These initiatives have done valuable work around climate disclosures, target setting and transition plans. But it’s up to governments and regulators, not companies, to create the rules and incentives needed to help drive the shift to a lower-carbon economy. Today's FT Moral Money newsletter:

What will it take to close the global forest finance gap by 2030? That urgent question was at the heart of the newly launched Roadmap for Action on Forest Finance, a collaboration between the COP30 Presidency, the Forest & Climate Leaders’ Partnership, UNEP, and the High-Level Climate Champions. Catalytic capital is one of those crucial levers to close the forest finance gap. I joined a dynamic panel at the launch event exploring private sector solutions for sustainable land use, and discussed how innovative finance mechanisms - like the Catalytic Capital for Agricultural Transition Fund (CCAT) managed by VOX Capital – can expand agricultural productivity while keeping forests standing. In my mind, there are three key reasons why funds like CCAT matter: > Accelerates change: Catalytic capital de-risks early investments and unlocks 3–4x more private finance. > Complements other efforts: CCAT is part of a growing portfolio of solutions to halt deforestation, and can broaden the impact of existing conservation and government initiatives. > Drives innovation: As a first-mover, CCAT is helping to shape new financial markets for agricultural transition. We hope the fund will pave the way for other catalytic pools of capital to invest in this transition, be it through CCAT or other structures.
