Most SMEs avoid SEO because it “takes too long.” But what they don’t realise is — the longer you avoid it, the longer you keep paying for traffic. I get it. When you’re running a business, you want results yesterday. That’s why paid ads feel comfortable — fast setup, quick wins, visible metrics. But here’s the trap: Google and Meta will always charge you rent for visibility. Stop spending, and your leads disappear overnight. SEO, on the other hand, is like buying property instead of renting. It takes time to build — but once it’s yours, it keeps bringing traffic without ongoing ad spend. I’ve seen businesses spend lakhs every month on ads they could have reduced by half — if they had invested in SEO six months earlier. Paid ads bring speed, but SEO builds stability. The Affiliate & Partner Marketing Association has submitted a response to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) consultation on the draft updated guidance for storage and access technologies. This could be a milestone for the affiliate industry, as it's the first 'official' response we've written and the start of our journey dealing with regulators and government. The new guidance – following a review of responses to the consultation – will explain how the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 (PECR) as amended, applies when an organisation uses technologies that store information, or access information stored, on someone’s device (e.g., a cookie). We wanted to use the opportunity to alert the ICO to the affiliate industry while making a series of recommendations. In a nutshell we've urged the ICO to: 1. Adapt PECR for Low-Risk Technologies: Such as those used in many affiliate and partner marketing models. These changes would provide a more practical approach for less intrusive business practices. 2. Clearly Differentiate Affiliate & Partner Marketing: Ensure a clear distinction between affiliate and partner marketing and other forms of online marketing, such as programmatic display advertising. 3. Provide Specific Examples in Final Guidance: Include detailed examples in the final guidance of technologies used in affiliate and partner marketing that are ‘strictly necessary’ for delivering services requested by consumers. 4. Simplify Consent Mechanisms: Clarify and simplify consent mechanisms, such as allowing a unified consent for both advertising and measurement purposes, even when these activities are split between two entities. One of the hardest parts of running a service business is finding the balance in payment terms. We all know the importance of putting clear terms on paper advance %, final payment timelines, late fee clauses. And yes, we do it at Incer. But in reality, things are never that straightforward. For example, when it’s a new client, terms protect you. They set the expectations clearly. But when it’s a recurring client someone who has been paying you on time for months or years and suddenly delays for a month or two, it’s not that easy to “enforce” terms. You can’t just rush them or burn the bridge, because that relationship is more valuable in the long run. In those moments, I’ve realized terms protect the business, but trust protects the relationship. Sometimes, you need to manage the short-term cashflow pain yourself, because the client relationship matters more. It’s not about being soft. It’s about understanding the bigger picture. And honestly, this balance is still something I’m learning every day.
