Fantastic HR Directors Roundtable hosted by Jane Amphlett at Howard Kennedy LLP exploring resilience and navigational leadership with Dr Kelly Culver Peter Jones and Alexander Chelmis from Resilience Nexus a wonderful event with ten outstanding HR Directors. A study by PwC in 2023 found that “resilient organisations experienced 40% fewer operational disruptions and were able to return to normal operations 50% faster than their less resilient counterparts. This same study showed that 89% of business leaders view resilience as a critical strategic priority” (PwC Resilience Research, 2023). Building resilience isn’t - and can’t be a “One-and-Done” activity. Resilience requires a different mental model - it needs a long-term lens, and this is where the Board and Non-Exec Director excel! The role of the Board, from a resilience perspective, is to ensure the sustainability of the company through its resilience strategy - the resilience of a company is the differentiating factor between failure and success. When Boards use a long-term perspective aligned with their strategic objectives, they are more likely to reinforce their organisation’s resilience. #reslilience #sustainability #boardagenda #leadershipassessment

There is an alternative to CIPD. There are plenty of great programmes out there — Barrow and Parker HR Consultancy, for example, offer the equivalent of Level 3, 5 and 7 and is accredited by the Institute of Leadership. They’re far more pragmatic and focused on the realities of HR today. Disruptive HR is another invaluable resource for anyone serious about growing their HR career at any level - and Lucy Adams and Karen Moran reinvigorated my love for HR when I was at the point of despair. I’ve never been a fan of the old-school “1972 personnel” style of teaching that CIPD still leans on. I felt that back in 1997 when I did mine, and I haven’t paid them a penny since. For me, curiosity has always been more valuable than qualifications. Learning, adapting, and staying curious are what really keep us relevant.
