As predicted, Aldi UK really DID 'win Christmas'... ⤵ In December, Lumen Research analysed attention data in partnership with TVision. We looked specifically at supermarket TV advertising in the UK in the run-up to Christmas and measured how much attention each advertising spot achieved. The research data came from the TVision panel of UK households that have signed up to have front-facing cameras installed on their home TVs. We found that Aldi's Kevin the Carrot spot achieved more attention than its peer group. It was top of the 40-second spots and also top of the 60-second spots. Earlier in the year, Ebiquity plc released research showing a 'near-perfect line' between the seconds of attention a media channel receives and the ROI brands achieve from advertising in that channel. With that in mind, we predicted that Aldi would have a very good Christmas. Then, this week, Aldi released very strong Christmas trading figures alongside a statement saying it was 'their best-ever Christmas'. Of course, it wasn't just the ad that led to this success; the 4Ps of marketing undoubtedly combined to achieve this outcome. However, there is a growing body of evidence that when brands optimise their media and creative using real-world attention metrics, they see better campaign ROI, including: ★ More awareness, consideration and purchase intent (Havas Media Network study, 2024). ★ Better performance in terms of clicks (PwC study, 2023). ★ More profit (Ebiquity plc study, 2024).
