Delighted to speak yesterday at LIVE 2025: Retail Week x The Grocer on the topic of “Going the Extra Green Mile,” hosted by Hugh Radojev with great panelists Katherine Rolfe from Wickes and Carley-Jane Stanton from The Fairtrade Foundation. We discussed how better data and improved collaboration across the value chain are vital for progress towards more ethical and sustainable supply chains. It was great to cover a sweep of topics, from Net Zero (with Gousto's 2050 target), to farmer livelihoods, to packaging circularity (with Gousto's target of 100% recyclability for primary packaging). And we so-very-nearly broke the mould and got through the whole discussion without mentioning AI!

So many "AI" events out there, but I got loads out of this one. Critically, growth and value from AI can only be gained if people - consumers and colleagues - trust it. Easy to say, hard to do. So for this edition of #TheInsightLive we took a deep dive into trust in #AI. I was joined by a fantastic panel including Ronnie Chung, Head of Responsible AI at Centrica, Jonathan Dotan, Founder of EQTY Lab, Professor Nicole Gillespie, Chair of Trust at the University of Melbourne, and Leanne Allen, Head of AI at KPMG UK. We gave viewers a preview of our new global study – conducted with the University of Melbourne - on trust, attitudes and use of AI. This led to a thought-provoking discussion on the importance of using AI ethically and responsibly, with people at the heart of the decision-making. We also discussed the challenges of AI regulation, and the practical steps you can take to ensure your AI systems have trust built in from the outset. 🍷 Retail Innovation in Action: Breaking down Barriers to Purchase at shelf... Stopping in M&S Food (London Colney) on Friday night I found a fantastic Hero Bay dedicated to alcohol-free wine, complete with a self-service sampling machine. Shoppers could try before they buy - a bold, shopper-centric move in a category still fighting perceptions around taste, quality & occasion. 📈 Category Growth Theory in Practice As well as being a great piece of in-Store theatre, it's a good example of how trial can be used strategically to unlock long term growth for low-penetration segments or brands: ↳ Sampling combats inertia & reduces perceived risk (“Will I like it?”, “Is it worth the price?”) ↳ Direct experience builds familiarity & trust ↳ Trial drives #penetration - the most powerful growth lever (Ehrenberg-Bass) + data (of course) on who’s trying & then buying the wine However… …on a Friday evening, the machine was out of both wine & sample glasses. Whether it was technical failure or high demand, the result was the same - a missed moment. 🛠️ And this highlights a fundamental truth: breakthrough ideas demand flawless execution. Especially in high-footfall Stores. Quite often, the bigger the idea the more that can go wrong - so in the planning stage the risks need to be identified and addressed.  That means: - Building contingency plans - Ensuring real-time stock checks - Allocating enough in-store hours for maintenance If the space is worth it, the support must match. Key Takeaways: ↳ Trial is a critical growth driver - especially where taste or education matters. Yes its expensive, but its a long term investment & ROI is on lifetime spend. ↳ There are lots of ways to do it & each brand/category will have a different 'best solution'. ↳ Great ideas need great ops ↳ Test, learn, optimise & then scale And by the way - the rest of the Store looked awesome. Most Retail Media Networks still feel a bit awkward when it comes to justifying their relatively high prices compared to other media They mistakenly peddle an awareness → consideration → conversion logic — but this thinking is flawed, shoppers don’t move through funnels. When they need or want something within a particular category, shoppers buy something that does the job, is easy to think of and easy to buy. Brands compete on mental and physical availability, not impressions & clicks and Retail Media is a mental availability & physical availability engine It’s the most contextually powerful channel for refreshing memory structures at the moment of category entry (“I’m cooking dinner”, “I need a drill”, “I’m upgrading my makeup”). Ads near the point of sale reinforce brand-category links and keep brands salient when buyers are literally entering the category and deciding which brand to buy. In-store and onsite visibility make brands easier to find and to be chosen. So RMNs shouldn’t sell “awareness” or “impressions” or “conversion”. They should sell reach, context, salience and physical availability/presence because these are the things that deliver brand growth Retail Media is the only media that links mental and physical availability and it does it contextually to shoppers who are in the market and entering the category – and that’s how brands grow
