Here's the latest update on the UK Sustainability Reporting Standards (UK SRS), replacing the old SDS: ✅ The Global Baseline is Confirmed: The UK SRS (based on IFRS S1 & S2) consultation is complete, with final standards expected this Autumn. This is our non-negotiable reporting foundation. ⏰ No More Delays: A key proposed amendment removes the transition relief, meaning sustainability disclosures must be published concurrently with financial statements—emphasizing data connectivity and accountability from day one. 📉 The Green Taxonomy is Gone: HM Treasury has officially scrapped plans for a UK Green Taxonomy, choosing instead to focus resources on the mandatory reporting regime and transition planning. A major regulatory hurdle has been removed, but a greater focus on credible action is required. 🚀 Transition Plans Go Centre Stage: The government is actively consulting on mandating transition plan disclosures for FTSE 100 and regulated financial institutions. This moves the focus from what you measure to how you will actually get to Net Zero. The path is clear: The time for voluntary, fragmented reporting is over. Despite recent pullbacks from climate commitments, understanding the financial incentives behind banks' climate strategies remains crucial. Morse and Sastry's NBER paper examines why banks make climate-related lending decisions through economic frameworks of risk management and returns. Their analysis is especially valuable as financial institutions recalibrate their climate positions based on economic realities rather than pledges. The research reveals banks rarely engage in simple divestment from carbon-intensive sectors. Instead, they make strategic decisions based on their expertise and growth opportunities. Banks with sector-specific knowledge tend to target those sectors for climate initiatives, leveraging their comparative advantages. These findings matter because they explain the initial wave of climate commitments and the current reassessment. Whether banks maintain formal net zero pledges, the underlying economic forces—transition risk management, new market growth, regulatory preparedness—continue lending portfolios across global financial institutions. Norges Bank puts it bluntly in their latest climate disclosures: “The cost of a transition to a low-carbon economy for the fund may indeed be modest given the falling cost of green technologies. However, we believe the effects of physical climate risk on the fund may be severely underestimated.” To back it up, they’ve introduced a new internal model. The results are wild: It estimates that the present value of expected losses from physical climate risk on their US equity investments is 19% (27% at the 95th percentile) under a 3°C warming scenario. Compare that to just 2% in the traditional MSCI Climate Value at Risk (CVaR) model. That’s a significant gap. It’s going to be interesting (and urgent) to follow how climate risk modeling evolves from here. Link to the report in the comments. Important report out from the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee this week, highlighting the urgency of strengthening England's policy framework to unlock more investment into nature restoration. The Committee highlighted in particular the importance of growing the integrity and scale of the Biodiversity Net Gain policy and the important legal safeguards to be put in place if the proposed new Nature Restoration Fund is to genuinely deliver net positive impacts on #nature.
